Default T206 factory / factories

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums. Big early baseball history fan and have a small but growing prewar card collection. I live in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York.

This may have been asked in the past, but does anyone know the exact buildings or street addresses where T206 cards were produced? I ask because I just saw a photo of the building where 1933 Goudey cards were produced, and am now wondering about the birthplace of T206 cards.

Thanks.

Abmchenry..... Welcome to the Club.
The T206 cards were printed in NYC at the American Lithographic Co. in downtown Manhattan.

These cards were then shipped (by rail) to the various American Tobacco Co. Factories. On display here are vintage postcards (circa 1910) depicting three of the 9
ATC Factories, which manufactured tobacco products during the 1909 - 1911 timeframe.
Also listed are the other five Factories which produced ATC tobacco brands during this era.

Factory #25, Richmond, VA

ATC tobacco brands...... PIEDMONT, AMERICAN BEAUTY, BROAD LEAF, CAROLINA BRIGHTS, CYCLE, DRUM, OLD MILL, SOVEREIGN, SWEET CAPORAL

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - v....... Factory #25 .......v .

Factory #42, Durham, NC

ATC tobacco brands...... AMERICAN BEAUTY, PIEDMONT, SWEET CAPORAL

AMERICAN BEAUTY 460, Factory #42
. .

Factory #33, Reidsville, NC

ATC tobacco brand...... Ty Cobb Smoking Tobacco

Factory #30, Brooklyn, NY

ATC tobacco brands...... LENOX, SWEET CAPORAL, TOLSTOI, UZIT

. .

. ..

And, here are the other five Factory's manufacturing ATC tobacco brands during the 1909 - 1911 era......

Factory #6, Middletown, Ohio........ POLAR BEAR

Factory #17, Virginia..................... El PRINCIPE de GALES

Factory #649, New York State....... HINDU, SWEET CAPORAL

I'm including these two Factory's which included 1910 COUPON cards and RED CROSS cards with their Cigarettes. Since these cards were printed by
American Lithographic during 1910-1911 timeframe, and are identical with the T206 cards......

Factory #3, New Orleans, LA.......... COUPON (T213-1)

Factory #10, Jersey City, NJ........... RED CROSS (T215-1)

Check-out this link for additional info regarding T206 cards...... T206 Reference

Welcome! Ted really has you covered and is one of the experts on the subject. If you're curious about the exact address here you go:

230 Park Ave South
New York, NY 10003

The building still stands and has been repurposed like many old buildings.

Default The Polar Bear

I visited the site of factory #6 in 2016. Supposedly it was quite the place in its day, but there's nothing there now to indicate its former glory.

Big Al might have a different take on this subject.

Thanks everyone, amazing to see that this much is known about the key T206 landmark locations. If I was a train robber back in 1910, I know what my targets would have been....

Here's an ad from 1909 about the shipment of 10,000 Old mill packs with SL's in them that's 20,000 Southern League t206's.

Wow, these images are incredible, thanks all for sharing them. Shame that the PB factory no longer exists. Also, I had no idea that certain brands included two cards per pack. I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm shopping for unopened packs on eBay. They can't be that expensive right? : )

Many of them had two cards per pack here's a Hindu ad

If you haven't seen this thread, in Tom's post number 11 there is a link to a pdf file from an ATC journal some of the ledger pages have the packing instructions for inserting different tobacco cards. It's a great read I recommend looking through it if you haven't already.

Hey guy,

Go for it....and find a UZIT cigarette pack. At the tail-end of the T206 production in the Spring of 1911,
Factory #30 was inserting a T206 card with a T80 card in the their UZIT cigarette packs.

T80 cards

Thanks again everyone, will check out that thread. Someone needed to tell the Hindu marketing team that they were burying the lede by mentioning the tobacco before the southern leaguer cards.

Ted,

I think there might be a possibility you have your NY tobacco tax district designations mixed up. Below are a couple of period sources that show the tobacco tax districts from the IRS and from a publication of the time. Also, note one of the district changes that occurred in the images. At some point the second and third districts were consolidated into just the second district. This change can be seen on the Turkey Red and Egyptian Deities examples. Although Factory 7 3rd District was not a designated T206 factory, it tells an interesting story about tobacco tax districts. I believe that the Turkey Red, Egyptian Deities and others would have been coming out of the Soterios Anargyros factory located at 1322 Avenue A in Manhattan, which has been long demolished and had a street rename as well.

Why Factory 7 3rd District is interesting…
It leads me to believe that the Kinney Branch of the American Tobacco Company would be Factory 30 2nd District located at 517 West 22nd Street in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan’s West Side. This then points to the Penn Street Branch of the American Tobacco Company to be known as Factory 649 1st District located at 58 Penn Street in the South Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Luckily, what I consider to be Factory 30 2nd District and Factory 649 1st District remain in good shape with one being a school and the other an apartment building.

I'm curious to see what others have to say. Maybe this is known by some or I'm way off base. There seems to be a pretty significant amount of evidence to suggest I'm not thinking crazy. Would love to see evidence to contradict this. Just don't want to bore people if no one cares.

Hi Trey, from the information you provided on the different districts I would
say you are correct that factory 649 was in Brooklyn and factory 30 was in
Manhattan thanks for sharing that research.
