I've been picking up some '75 Topps cards lately. This Yount arrived in Saturday's mail. Figured I'd kick off this month's thread with a HOF rookie.

Random pickups, the nicest Koufax 15 I've seen, and the last two biggies checked off my 53 list. The Clemente East Hills card is pretty neat, I didn't know they were oversized until it arrived. I would recommend it as an affordable Clemente along with his 63 Fleer card.

Here's another '75 Topps example I picked up this month.
Card 351, Bob Boone, is obviously not as recognizable as the Robin Yount with which I started this thread. However, he was on the 1980 Phillies team that brought 8-year-old me immeasurable pride and joy.

Sorry in advance for the long rambling...
With prices of 1950's and 60's HOF'ers weirdly starting (already there?) to skyrocket lately, I was getting pretty depressed, because I was always doing searches for this classic 1964 Koufax card and feared I missed the boat. My brothers and I somehow acquired one when we were little, and to us it was like a creased, rounded-cornered 100 year old relic of ancient baseball, and we looked at it as a magical card of a southpaw Superman. (Growing up in Queens, we frequently heard Sandy Koufax's name from both of my parents, who were both huge Brooklyn Dodgers fans.) The funny thing is, it seems so many of the listings for this card are PSA 8 OC, as if every one of them was off-kilter. They generally could be had for something in the $30-$40 range, but I never pulled the trigger for some reason. Recently, though, three of them (centered worse than this guy) sold for $125, $136 and $140, so I thought I was SOL. Cardboard regrets are a tough thing to swallow. So, when a new one was listed, I added it to my watch list and was quickly made an offer by the seller. Based on past sales (not including the three very new ones mentioned above), it was a bit too much, so I haggled a little until he graciously lowered the price to just under $50, and I jumped on it!! To me, it seems like Koufax cards of all stripes are going to see the same upsurge in pricing the other greats are experiencing, so I am extremely happy to lock this great childhood memory into a plastic holder... 1964toppskoufax136PSA8oc.jpg (I forgot to add, the reason I always look at OC cards is because of price. A straight 8 - with the same clarity, sharpness of corners, etc., but centered a little better - is running around a whopping $400 bucks or so...before tax and shipping.) Plus, I also picked up this really tough to find variation, 1967 Topps #252 Bob Bolin 'White Streak Between Name' (Which makes no sense at all. How is something 'between' a singular object? It should either be 'White Streak Between Names' or 'White Streak Between First and Last Name')... 1967toppsbolin252whitestreak2.jpg

Not a story like yours, but based on where it is in my link below, about 3-4 yrs ago I also picked one up. I believe, at the time, I had zero Koufax cards so when I seen this one, which I really liked a lot, I decided to grab it.

I totally agree with you Casey. Your Brock card is gorgeous. I have several 5's and 6's of Yankee cards and I wouldn't trade them for anything. What is funny is I have met some collectors who wouldn't purchase a 5 or 6 but would buy a 9 that is way off center and tell us what a great deal it was. (I must admit I look at centering as most important, I can't understand and I know there's a lot of people who would take offense, but I think it's more important than centering.. I believe the grading companies use at least loupe to grade corners and I think sometimes a microscope. I don't look at my friends cards with a loupe or scope, do any of you? Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I love well printed 5's. Again Casey, a very, VERY nice card.

The significance of this may be lost on many collectors, but if you're among my errors and variations brethren, you might understand how excited I am to SCORE this southpaw (get it?)!! Sure, Herb Score is in all of our hearts due to his majestic appearance on the cover of (some versions of) "The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum" book, but talk about low POP...
1962score116PSA9PD.jpg There are only three total PSA 9 1962 Topps #116 Herb Score Green Tints in existence. Two are straight 9's, and then this one with the qualifier. That's it. (It's important to note that PSA didn't always put 'Green Tint' on the labels, so the POP is often off because GT's are hidden among the 'regular' graded cards. However, with Mr. Score, there are only three conventional 9's listed - two straight 9's and one with a qualifier - so that doesn't come into play.) Coming from New York, I don't give a darn about a tiny bit of snow on my cards (And come on, PSA. Print defect??? Where??!!), especially if I can get a beautiful, sharp cornered card at a fraction of the cost!!

The 1965 Topps #335 Mickey Lolich in my set binder is autographed, so a replacement was always a necessity. In looking to find an example in pretty nice shape on ebay, I realized that it was probably a better bet to just buy a graded one...and ran across this guy. It cost less than 1/10 of what straight PSA 9's have sold for recently, so I grabbed it. The centering on front is pretty fine by me, and the 'miscut' refers to the back bottom touching the border, which is also not a problem whatsoever...

Nice pick ups everyone.
That 57t Mays is not easy to find clean and centered, they have notorious snow issues. Picked up along my travels, this Banks is mesmerizing and goes well with that 63 Brock. 63 Fleer cards are undervalued right now so I just pick them up when they come along. Also, my centering OCD is getting worse... Last edited by Casey2296; 11-20-2020 at 09:55 PM. |

Finally can post again on this thread. First vintage pickups in a while. I've never been into the graded thing and never owned anything graded (have never subbed either). But decided as I get older that vintage graded is kind of more stable than newer, modern stuff. So diving into it.
Bought 3 PSA cards off Facebook earlier this week, and they should be here tomorrow. Will post those when I get them. But I also visited Bankston's in Waco yesterday. Great store and great owner. Brent told me he had some graded boxes in the back, so he went and grabbed them to let me look through them. Glad I did. Decided to buy these 2 cards. The new cornerstone of my entire PC. My most expensive card. ![]() Also a nice RC of a non-HOFer, although this guy has a good case to be in there. ![]() Also picked up a raw copy of one of my all time favorite cards (it was the first vintage card I ever saw back in 1992) ![]() Last edited by wdwfan; 11-22-2020 at 02:45 PM. |

These are the first 3 graded cards I bought. They came in today after I had purchased the ones I posted previously. These are the 3 that got my graded collecting started.
I actually bought the SGC because I liked the look of the cards in the black case. But I think I'm going to be selling it now because I am very CDO and love uniformity of having all PSAs. ![]() |

Beautiful cards, everyone. The older I get, the more I appreciate 50s/60s/70s cards. They remind me so much of the days when I was growing up. If I didn't own them personally, these cards were on my want list.
Case in point - this 1950 Richie Ashburn. It arrived in yesterday's mail. As a kid back in the early 80s, I would have thought it unattainable. After all, it was over 30 years old. To put that in perspective, I can almost imagine kids today reverentially gazing at a 1987 Topps Cal Ripken, Jr. Almost.

Off-Centering is usually unappealing to me personally, and I prefer taking a grading hit in the corners. But with this Koufax, I would not even notice. Great card.
