Was wondering if any of you out there could lend an assist as it relates to the "Bucky" Harris signature on this c. 1930's Tamazawa Mfg. baseball.
The ball has a number of autographs, some of which I can make out and some I can't. One name that's pretty clear is a "Bucky" Harris. I am hoping to get some opinions as to whether or not this is the HoF'er, Stanley "Bucky" Harris. I did some cursory research and the signature looks similar to several earlier examples I was able to find. But it also looks a bit different than some later-in-life examples I saw, hence my question. Any and all thoughts and feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon www.dugouttreasures.com |

From the known exemplars I have seen, I would say "no" to this one. The letter formation is very atypical and I believe this one to be clubhouse signed.

I agree with Mark. Haven't seen too many signed balls, but even his earliest sigs that I've seen have always connected the Y in Bucky and the H in Harris. There's an early American League ball on Ebay right now where he actually signed Stanley Harris (his given name) from the 30's and he even connected the Y and the H.

I think you are both correct that this signature is not Stanley "Bucky" Harris, but I don't think its clubhouse. After some additional research, I've come to believe is that this is a 1928 or 1929 team signed ball from the PCL's Sacramento Senators that included a "Bucky" Harris ("Bucky" Harris McGilliard) of their own who went on to relative stardom in Japanese baseball in the 1930's...

Jon, Nice detective work. I find it funny how many of our early (early-ish) baseball players had similar name/nick names. It makes it hard these days to determine which player signed what.

Great research, Jonathan...
I think you solved it. In addition to the anomalies Mike pointed out, the two "r"s are also wrong for Bucky Harris, the HOFer. Nice sleuthing! |
