Tough to pick a favorite...

Jim Banning was a righthand-throwing catcher for the Washington Nationals of the National League. But, he batted lefthanded and showed that ability off in MLB exactly once. While he played in three games over two seasons, he got to the plate only once. Confident in his lefthanded stroke, honed diligently during play in the Red River Valley League for the Fargo, ND team, he finally got to the plate for the Nationals in 1889 and . . . made an out. He never got another chance.

Lefty Stewart won 101 games across 10 MLB seasons, including 15 during Washington's pennant-winning 1933 season. That was after he nearly died in 1927 when his appendix burst while he was on a hunting trip.

Despite being told by doctors that he would never pitch again, he made a complete recovery and won 20 games for the 1930 St. Louis Browns. As Steve Carlton might point out, Stewart's feat of winning 20 games for the 1930 Browns is even more impressive than it sounds, considering the Browns that year finished with a record of 64-90.

The Giant Killer

In 1924 the Washington Senators faced a Game 7 against the New York Giants in that year's World Series. Bucky Harris, Washington's 26-year old player/manager was worried about the young, but rapidly developing first-baseman Bill Terry. So he "surprised" the Giants by starting righthander Curly Ogden, prompting John McGraw to commit to their "righthanded" lineup. After getting a strikeout and issuing a walk, Ogden was pulled and replaced by the lefthanded George Mogridge. An early variant on today's popular "opener".

Joe Krakauskas was of Lithuanian descent, a Canadian by birth, and a lefthanded pitcher for seven seasons in MLB.

In 1940, his Play Ball baseball card showcased his status as a Washington Senator and promoted the exciting, soon to be available, Superman card gum. Superman is believed to be ambidextrous.

Joe is best remembered today as the guy who didn't end DiMaggio's streak -- he gave up hit number 56.

I tried to look-up baseball players with the nickname "Lefty". I was expecting lots of players to come up, but not many did. Bob Weiland came up as "Lefty" shown here...

Here's another one of these 1871 Scorecards. There were 10 of these depicting Troy's players issued in 1871 -1872. I have had, or have seen 5 of them....they are very, very rare.

Great lefties so far. Here are 4 players that are members of a fairly uncommon group. Del Drake, Hal Chase, Rube Bressler and Johnny Cooney were all position players that threw left handed, but batted right.

So to celebrate this unusual attribute, I will execute a feeble left-handed scan lob (I am right-handed) for each player: T207 of Del Drake, Tom Barker game card of Hal Chase, W514 of Rube Bressler, and a 1941 Play Ball of Johnny Cooney.

It is interesting to note that the W514 of Bressler depicts him to be a right-handed thrower.

I don't think anyone mentioned Rebel Oakes. A left-handed batter, he was also quite the "speedster". He once laid down a Bunt, and scored
in the same play. The combination of his speed around the bases, and an error (or two) by the opposing team resulted in a "Bunt - HR"

Jake Daubert grew up in the Pennsylvania coal mining region (not far from where we live). He was an outstanding 1st Baseman.
His batting and fielding performances were considered as the National League's equivalent of a Hal Chase at 1st base. His career
spanned 15 years (9 with Brooklyn and 6 with Cinci). He had a respectable career BA = .303 and should probably be in the HOF.

To continue this narrative, 35-year-old George Mogridge pitched 4.2 innings and gave up 1 earned run, thereby keeping the Senators in Game 7, which Walter Johnson eventually won in relief in the 12th inning. Earlier in the 1924 WS, with the Senators down 2 games to 1 and playing at NY, Mogridge started critical Game 4, pitched 7.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs, and was the winning pitcher. This is the only WS game the Senators won at NY.

Despite WaJo's heroics in relief in Game 7, arguably, the Senators' pitching heroes for the 1924 WS were Mogridge and fellow lefty, Tom Zachary. Zachary was the starting and winning pitcher in Game 2 (8.2 innings) and elimination Game 6 (a 9-inning complete game).

From 1913-1916, Joe Boehling started 100 games as a lefthanded part of a Washington Senators staff that included Walter Johnson.

Then, at the end of his career in 1920, he started 2 games for the Cleveland team that won the World Series, despite losing Ray Chapman to the only fatal HBP in MLB history.

Finally, on the day after Pearl Harbor in 1941, he died from injuries sustained as the result of a fall.
