I found this while doing some unrelated research in Sporting News archives available at Paper of Record in the research section of the SABR page. Interesting initial perspective on the Topps Washington fiasco.
The article implies it was only 2 sheets which were printed with the Washington designation, but in fact the 1st three sheets were initially printed this way (the article does get the names of the impact players correct). Overlooked is the fact that all 5 sheets were initially formatted with "Washington", and later changed. The remaining 2 sheets were never meant to be printed with "Washington" designators, but that pesky Freisleben snuck through because someone didn't look at the 4-player rookie cards too closely (wish that same someone didn't notice the Winfield). Anyway, thought it was a neat find. Last edited by deweyinthehall; 04-29-2020 at 06:28 PM. |

I feel your pain, bro - thanks for sticking with it - I enjoyed the article. Maybe someday the admin will allow uploads larger than 78 kb, eh?

Funnily enough, I posted about some of this a week ago: http://www.thetoppsarchives.com/2020...ng-spaces.html

I don't know whether to thank you or blame you for how much wasted time I have spent on your site.

Thanks for the pic, Dave, but, man, those pajama uni's were really the pits. Were the MLB owners using fashion design school dropouts for fresh ideas in the '70's, or what?

It would get worse-just ask the White Sox!

![]() Yeah, in many ways, Bill Veeck was a marketing genius, but those White Sox uni's with the Little Lord Fountleroy collars, shorts and kneesocks were hilariously awful. Veeck must have been insanely bitter by the late '70's to have inflicted that stuff on his players and Chicago fans. ![]() |

Notice the last line in the story - The asking price for a Honus Wagner card is $1100.
