While breaking the E-107 set into teams, I found a few cards that are misidentified.
Jake Stahl - is actually Chick Stahl. Both were with the Boston Americans in 1903, but the image on the card matches Chick. Fred Beck - is actually Erve Beck. Erve played for Detroit in 1902, then retired. Fred Beck played his first season in 1909 and never played for Detroit. Hooks Wiltse - is actually Snake Wiltse. Snake Wiltse played for the New York Highlanders in 1903. Hooks Wiltse was a rookie in 1904 with the New York Giants and never played for the Highlanders. Ira Thomas - is actually Roy Thomas. Roy played with the Phillies in 1903. Ira was a rookie with the Highlanders in 1906. He never played for the Phillies. Malachi Kittredge is misspelled. It should be "Kittridge" I hope someone finds this information useful. John Last edited by droid714; 04-19-2020 at 07:38 AM. |

John,
Is it possible you might have made an error in your description: Jake Stahl - is actually Chick Stahl. Both were with the Boston Americans in 1903, but the image on the card matches Jake. |

This is of interest to me as a Boston collector. I’m pretty certain that the image on the E107 is Chick Stahl.

Misidentified in the price guides and card catalogs that I have, also the small handful of cards that I've seen in graded holders.
The PSA population report has them misidentified as well. |

My bad, thanks for catching it. I've edited my original post to correct my error.

As for the Jake vs. Chick Stahl issue, there's even more compelling evidence.
Chick Stahl was heading into his seventh season in 1903. At that point in his career, he had a lifetime batting average of .322. The Stahl card lists him as "Fielder" which means "Outfielder" in the context of the E-107 set. In his career, Chick Stahl played in 1304 games, all in the outfield except for one game in which he pitched. Jake Stahl was a rookie in 1903 and played in only 40 games that season, 28 as a catcher and one in the outfield. He was sold to Washington prior to the 1904 season. For his career, he was primarily a first baseman. Even if you ignore the fact that the image on the card is that of Chick Stahl, based on their history/stats, it's far more likely that they would have produced a card of Chick Stahl than one of Jake Stahl. Ironically, Irv Young didn't even play for Boston in 1909 or 1910. Boston traded him to Pittsburgh in June of 1908. He finished 1908 with Pittsburgh, who sold him to Minneapolis of the American Association, prior to the 1909 season.
The White Sox purchased him from Minneapolis in August of 1909, although he didn't appear in any games for the White Sox that year. He Finished his career with the White Sox after the 1911 season. |
