![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I picked up this little Sugar Bowl souvenir plate yesterday at an antiques fair....anyone seen one of these before? I haven't....I know the southern boys are ravenous about their football. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maison_Blanche As I recall the Sugar Bowl started in 1935....On the back it's marked Maison Blanche Co. New Orleans, which would have been the Maison Blanche department store...Maison Blanche, which was owned and operated by a number of principles throughout it's life span, was located on Canal Street in New Orleans from about 1897 till 1997. Today it's a Ritz Carlton. The basketball player is wearing knee pads.....the tennis player is wearing long pants.....the football player has reeded pants and I vaguely see friction strips...so with all that I'd put the plate in the 1930's....and since the Sugar Bowl started in 1935...it's probably one of the earlier souvenirs...I haven't been able to find an example on the internet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Kilns It's interesting Vernon Kilns was in Vernon California...They operated from 1931-1952. According to Wiki: "Vernon Kilns produced transfer-print specialty ware which could be special ordered. Custom decal plates, as special order items, were produced for department stores, for promotional advertisement, for commemorative events, and for the tourist trade." The plate, if you could call it that, closer to a tip tray, measures a wopping 4 3/8" wide!

.
. . . but for some reason I recall mine as being in brown font/design instead of blue. I could easily be mistaken. I will try to locate tonight and verify the color ink/dye used. For what it is worth, I purchased mine over 40 years ago at a large antique/flea market at the county fair grounds. I thought it was pretty neat at that time, and still do. Can honestly say I had not come across another until Carlton's recent post. |

I love it when a 6 year old question finally gets an answer.

:-)
I did not even notice the date of the original posting. Good thing I wasn't six years late showing up to my own wedding. I truly would have missed out. But I will say, it is fun to catch up on old/missed posts. Thanks for the morning chuckle. |
