As a courtesy to a very important advertiser and board supporter, Clean Sweep Auctions, their current auction is closing this evening. Of special note in this auction is a huge grouping of great looking N172 Old Judges. Good luck to all bidders, consignors and the AH. And thanks again to Steve and team for allowing Net54baseball to help spread the word throughout the hobby.

As usual, I am out, bid more than a world record on a card I thought would not be popular at all and have been outbid. That said, good luck Steve.

A familiar refrain on most auctions by me. I bid my highest and if I get it I get it, if not the world keeps going. I usually get outbid.

Picked this up for a great price... very happy because 10 years ago, I sold this exact card and have been looking to replace it ever since. Low grade with a weird left edge, but the image looks good and hey, you can never have too many Old Judge's, right?

There were a few neat little nuggets in the OJs. Who got the Alvord? Dang it....

I picked up a few E cards, but it is the O J I picked up I am most intrigued with. I picked up an Old Judge of Cahill with a bat. The Cahill in the Old Judge book has the same pose in it, but the words Old Judge are in the rainbow shape in the middle of the card and mine is in a rectangle in the top left. The one I picked up also has cursive script, whereas the on in the book has the standard print. So I guess my question is to the O J experts out there is do I have something special or are these variances common in Old Judges?....Any help on this question would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Tim Kindler |

Buying the book isn't enough, Tim. Reading it is a plus. Many poses are duplicated in several printings. The one you purchased is a Type B 1887 card. The one in the book is a Type A 1887 card (see page 122). No scarcity in either case.

Thanks for clarifying what is in the book. Not that the book wasn't written clearly in the 1st place, but just trying to understand all of the specifics of production, etc. of this set has always seemed daunting to me. I do need to really dive deeper into the understanding of the set. That being said, I'm still very happy with the pick up of this Indianapolis player since I'm from Fort Wayne. Now I will try to find the type A of this card!
THANKS again for the education! |

Tim-Check on EBay. Many of the 1887 Indianapolis cards are available and not very popular (read cheap). The 1887 Type As are slightly easier than the Type Bs so you should have no trouble finding Patsy's mate.

Thanks, will do. I never dove down deep into understanding this set because it just seemed so overwhelming with the sheer amount of cards/poses/ years of production in it, but im looking forward to educating myself on it in the near future. Thanks again for responding to my question tonight and getting me started.

Got my first OJ in Clean Sweep, I’ve wanted a Radbourn in the collection. Love the history of this guy and hope to add the image of him flipping everyone off someday...

Steve Verkman quite possibly wears the nicest slacks in the hobby. However his shirts are like blouses. But he has excellent taste in restaurants. The sushi pizza in Toronto was an eye opener. Now whats this about Old Judges?

Hats off to Steve for listing the Old Judges individually and thereby allowing collectors to buy the cards they need and not ones they don't. I think this leads to higher prices for the consignors and happier buyers. A real win win.
Congratulations Gary for completing the Deacon McGuire pose run! Last edited by oldjudge; 02-05-2019 at 02:14 PM. |
