I was wondering how many players that played before 1946 ( pre-war) are still alive ? And what is the oldest set they appear in ?

Baseball Almanac lists the current oldest living players. Many played in the 40's. Terwillinger is the name that jumped out b/c of his cards...Oldest is Tom Jordan 99 with a 1977 TCMA card. (cards shown here are not mine)

Eddie Robinson came up in September '42. A couple other guys came up in August '42, but I had never heard of them.
Robinson has a 1948 Topps Magic Photo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...seball_players Last edited by Chris-Counts; 01-17-2019 at 07:39 PM. |

On a side note, when Doerr passed I think he was the last living player from the 30s.

Fred Caligiuri, who died Nov 30, 2018, was the last remaining major leaguer who debuted in the majors prior to Dec 7, 1941. He had just turned 100 years old on Oct 22, 2018.
He played his first game for the Philadelphia A's on Sep 3, 1941. Steve

According to the list there are 10 players still alive that played pre 1946:
1. Tom Jordan 2. Bill Mills 3. Val Heim 4. Eddie Robinson 5. Eddie Basinski 6. George Yankowski 7.Milt Welch 8.Chris Haughey 9.Don Hasenmayer 10.Tommy Brown The oldest debut was George Yankowski ( August 17, 1942). Oldest card I could find so far is a 1947 Tip top of Eddie Basinski. And 1947 Brooklyn Dodger Picture Pack of Tommy Brown.

I'm happy to see George Yankowski is still with us - he lived in my town when I was growing up, and had been my dad's high school baseball coach in the 1950s.
He was very nice to me the couple of times we chatted in the 1980s, and he was surprised to see a young teenager had such an interest in baseball from the 1940s. I hadn't looked in a while but had assumed he was no longer with us, so that's a pleasant surprise for me! |
