As they did in 1939, the season Roy Hobbs (fictionally) played. I'm trying to think what else they had in common for only that 1939 season.

Sonny Stotur is the WINNER. He was the first to respond with the correct answer. DiMaggio wore #9 in his rookie season, 1936.
Frank Crosetti wore #5 in 1936. In 1937 DiMaggio wore #5.

Ted Williams wore #9 when his rookie season, 1939, officially began (and through out his career).

However, there is an interesting "twist" to Ted's uniform number(s). Can any of you figure out what I'm alluding to ?

I vaguely remember this, it's something like Williams wore 5 at one point in the minors or in spring training.

You too, are a WINNER this evening. During Spring Training in 1939, Ted Williams wore #5. Ben Chapman wore #9. He was traded to Cleveland for the 1939 season.
Then Ted got #9.

I love these "numbers games".
