Hello,
I am looking for a home office scanner to make high resolution scans of my collection, for both my personal records and perhaps down the road to do a PSA Online Photo Album. I am looking to possibly go with the "Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner", which costs about $230. Would that be a good choice or are there better options out there? Thanks, Eric |

That Epson is used by quite a few board members and works great. I use the Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II and can highly recommend it.

Have you considered a portable wand scanner?
You can find them pretty cheap on ebay. Here's the details on one of them that might help you - Product Information The handheld Magic Wand Portable Scanner from VuPoint scans documents, photos, newspapers, and virtually any smooth surface onto a microSD card. With a scan area of 8.27 x 25" (or 50 inches at a lower resolution), the scanner can store any letter or legal size document or image. Take the portable scanner with you to the library and scan what you need for later, no need to waste paper or money on photocopies. When you get home, simply connect the scanner to your computer with the supplied USB cable to transfer your scans. If you scanned a text document, once your file is on the computer, you can use the included OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert any printed material into editable text (Windows only; not compatible with Mac OS). The scanner runs on 2 AA batteries so you can easily replace them when they run out; no need to carry a charger around with you. Using standard AA batteries, the scanner can perform at least 180 color scans or 200 monochrome scans. |

Thanks for the tips; I wound up getting the Canon. For anyone who uses the Canon, could you provide any tips on settings, etc. that you feel add to the quality of the image?
Thanks - Eric |

Scanners come with CCD or CIS technology.
CCD is GOOD for slabbed cards, CIS is NOT, usually you get blurry results. For non slabbed cards, both are fine.

I know that this may be a bit obvious, but first scan a card using the default settings. Leave the card where it is and start changing the settings that you are curious about (one increment at a time) and rescan the same card. After you do a bunch of scans, compare them and see what settings set-up works best for you.

I have the Canoscan 9000F Mark II. I like it, but it took me a while to get the settings to me liking. Still haven't figured out the trick to to scanning Chrome/shiny cards without them looking terrible. Anyone have any suggestions?

If anyone is looking to scan high volumes of raw cards I have a like new Fujitsu fi-7160 sheet feed scanner that has a transferable warranty with almost 3 years left on it. The Fujitsu scans the front and back of the card at a rate of 1 per second. Still have original box, packing materials and software. plus an extra 9' USB 3.0 cable.
PM me if interested in pics and details. |

Anyone have some advise on how to get both the front and back of a card to appear to be in one scan? Thanks.

Used to do it on ebay, just take your scans, copy the back scan and increase the "paper size" in your photo editor and paste the back scan next to the front scan.

I'm a Cannon CanoScan 9000F MarkII user. I've only used it at it's default settings since it was perfect. Only thing I change is the DPI for large scans or close-ups. Haven't tried a chrome, metallic, refractor card yet but I'll fool around with it and see if there's a happy setting for them.

Canon's Canoscan line has a real good track record. I'm still using the 8400, and have done a lot of scanning with it. It's been a workhorse, and it's still doing a great job. When I get my new laptop, I'll upgrade to the 9000F mkII, but I'm happy with the results, especially with what I paid for it. Obviously, it wouldn't work for the latest Windows release, but with 7, works fine.
It handles all varieties and thicknesses of slabs with no problem.

To those with a Canon scanner - What app/software are you using to actually operate the scanner - take the scan?

I just use the Canon driver software Canon IJ Scan Utility. I don't use any of the Canon provided programs. In Advanced Mode, I just preview the scan, adjust scan area, and scan. If it's a high DPI and I'm not sure what the true output size will be, I just open the scan in basic Microsoft Paint. It doesn't automatically resize it to fit your monitor like other programs do. No need to adjust colors or touch up an area so those other programs are unneeded. Crop it in the Preview, and then Scan.

I've always thought the same thing. I do have a document scanner Fujitsu IX500 ScanSnap that is incredible for scanning receipts and other paperwork into PDF's. I'll have to test it with some junk wax era cards and post results here. The scanner it's self does have resolution settings, so it can scan per second, but the scan quality is down. Better scans take a bit longer to feed but it's extremely reliable and hardly ever jams or pulls more than one sheet at a time. I chose this model since I see many hospitals using it to scan driver's license and insurance cards, along with lab slips and whatever else.
