Seeing as most of us are collectors... we were born with the Gene. As a result most of us collect other things as well. I like to scour estate sales, antique/vintage shows and goodwills looking for treasures regularly. I am not above digging through the trash either!!
Well today I found this treasure at goodwill...Steelmaster locking file. This beauty was way ahead of it's time when it was made...as it was made for storing slabs of old cardboard...even those annoying oversized blue jay publishing cards!! And for the price of a t206 beater!! What have you found lately? Last edited by ullmandds; 02-25-2018 at 12:42 PM. |

The epic pick is what we live for...
I've gotten a few decent ones over the years, not much lately.

My best pick was a 1970 Mustang. This guy had a house that needed to be gutted and re-built, and my friend was going to do the work. I went with him to look at the project, it was a disaster, the roof had been leaking for maybe 30 years that no one was living in the house, there were mushrooms all over the inside. The car had been in the garage since 1975. My buddy told the guy he had to move the car so he had a space to work out of. The guy said if anyone wanted the car, they could have it. I went and bought a battery, a can of starter fluid, and a can of gas, and drove it home. The motor was all raced out, I put on new tires and rims, some basic maintenance, and drove it for 3 years before trading it for a 4wd truck when I moved to Idaho.

That is funny. I purchased mine back in the mid-1970's and it was old then. Maybe 1940's or 50'?

Hey Pete hope all is well. This isn't collecting related, but it was a nice find for
me. These are 2 Walnut live edge slabs, both are 13" X 156" X 2" thick. Found these about 8 months ago, still haven't done anything with them yet. ![]() |

Oh the possibilities for those beauties! Nice find! They'd look good as benches, a couch/entryway table, etc.

Not a lot lately. Our city went to the city provided bins for trash pickup.
Before that I'd get some nice stuff. People across the street tossed a stained glass window they replaced. And one street over I got a railroad car mover - a massive wooded pry bar used in switchyards- and a really neat coal shovel. And a few doors up a couple balloon tire bikes and a set of tire chains for them. The bikes aren't all that good, but the old bike guys I've talked to have never seen anything like the tire chain set. Yes, I collect way too much "stuff" |

Damn Pete!
You had to ask. Yes, I'm a picker, never officially called one, but I know that I am. ![]() Here are a few items that I picked in the tail end on 2017. Nothing really of much value, mostly just items that caught my eye and I thought another collector might be interested in. Here are the items pictured below. 1. A vintage Coca Cola bottle carrier. Not sure why I bought it, but I now use it to hold my mail & monthly utility bills. 2. A late 50s-early 60s Hutch football helmet. Found at a thrift store in with the Halloween costumes. 3. Allen & Ginter tin. No explanation needed for that. ![]() 4. A 100th Anniversary Kentucky Derby julep glass. There are two different versions of this glass. One version was print in error and harder to find. I found this error version at a roadside indoor flea market. 4. Vintage Ertl farm toy. That came from a Goodwill store. 5. 1979 vintage Star Wars Dewback toy. That also came from a Goodwill store. Every item in the photo I bought for $5 or less. Nice pick on the Steelmaster file! |

I collected stamps as a child. I started selling some of the old collection on ebay when I realized I could make money buying old collections and reselling.....just like baseball cards.
So I answered an ad on craigslist and paid $200.00 for a very large collection. Well that collection had over $4,625.00 face vaule of unused US postage stamps in full sheets. I will never need to buy a stamp at the Post Office again! I have sold probably around $500.00 worth of stuff already and have most of the unused postage stamps left Very happy with that haul. Along the same wood line I have a friend who owns a high end cabinet shop. He gives me any wood at his cost I want and all the maple cutoffs I want. Can’t tell you how much curly maple I have for free but they make awesome cutting boards like this one below. Drew

Here’s one I made from walnut with maple accents. Very nice. Not to get into a cutting board thread but here is a similar one I just finished with a brick wall pattern. Walnut with maple “mortar” with some red padauk bricks thrown in for accents. Drew

I own a vintage toy store, but I'll pick up anything I can make a buck on and have been doing so for a long time now. I go to probably 30-50 auctions per year, hit numerous garage sales, antique shows, flea markets, tag sales and scour the internet for poorly listed items.
Some of my better scores have been a game used Tris Speaker bat for $50 that I sold for $9000, a train set for $400 that sold for $7900, a lamp for $3 that sold for $2700. My brother found a vacuform wall hanging of the Universal Monsters Creature From The Black Lagoon for $100 that he sold for $13,000. It now resides in the collection of Kirk Hammett of Metallica.

I check estate auction listings and many times they list "mantle clock" but it's not a Mickey Mantle Clock !!! I keep trying. Best item lately has been a roll of postal stamps ( about 50 +) for $ 1. The owner must have thought they weren't good any longer .

I had a similar find at a paper show, Mike. A book of stamps with a face value in excess of the price asked for the book.
I like Peter Max art and a month or two ago I picked up one of these posters for $3: ![]() Stole the image from eBay to show what it looks like. It is a 1970 11 x 16 Peter Max piece for the American Cancer Society's no-smoking campaign. It had great graphics and color and was in great shape. I also found a portfolio of lithos from the 1940s showing Los Angeles sights for a buck that my daughter used to decorate her apartment in college. Probably two best cards I ever picked were a W538 Jennings ![]() and a 1948 Kellogg's Pep Mikan RC that ended up a PSA 6. ![]() I also found a sportswriter's archive from the late 1960s-early 1970s that had dozens of great pictures and team issued photos, and even a Minnesota Pipers (ABA) team issue card set that included a pre-rookie card of HOFer Connie Hawkins. ![]()

I remember picking a couple of B18 blankets at an antique mall in CO years ago for a few bucks a piece. That was fun.

40 plus Yeas ago my Dad bought home a set of steelecase files that had held index cards. Each drawer had 3 rows, 6 drawers. Bottom two drawer larger no dividers great for posters and large format items. It had a lock made up of a long Steele bar that set into a guide on bottom up top was held by a padlock similar to yours. They served their purpose for many years. I tried for a year to give them away and hurt a little when I sent them off to recycle pile.

Fun thread. I know it's older but i'm new here. I don't have much luck with Sports/Card related picks. But i do really well with art and furniture - although my wife usually claims the best pieces.
These are a couple recent pick ups. Both original prints signed by the artist. Native stuff sells like crazy and anything "Gothic". ![]() ![]() |

Welcome to the forum.
Although this thread IS off topic, please remember to try to keep it to WWII and older baseball cards on the front page in the future. If you have questions please PM me. Quote:
