August pickup thread

Figure I would start a little early this month.. Picked up this nice vintage crossover Baseball Pinball game from a small antique shop here in NC. Neat game called the Sharps Shooter Baseball Bagatelle. Usually is missing the metal spinner at the top... Great vintage look... Measures 22 1/2 by 12 1/2 Dont collect many games but this caught my eye!

This might not be a rare item, or have much value from a monetary stand point, but this little thrift store find holds a lot of nostalgic value for me.

When I was a young developing Cardinals fan I used to check out an earlier edition of this book from our local library at least once a month, I never grew tired of pouring over the history of my beloved Cardinals or seeing all the old amazing pictures the book contained.

The author, Mr. Bob Broeg, had such an amazing amount of knowledge on the Cardinals as he grew up in St. Louis and after finishing up college (proud Missouri alum) and a stint in the Marine corp he was named Sports Editor of the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1958. He continued to write for the paper into the mid 1980s. He wrote his very last column in 2004.

He served as member of the Board Of Directors for the Baseball Hall Of Fame, along time member of the Committee of Baseball Veterans, was awarded the J.G Taylor Spink Award in 1979 & was elected to the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1997. The St. Louis Chapter of SABR is named for Bob Broeg.

To say this man was a huge influence on my love of Cardinals baseball & baseball in general would be an understatement. What makes the book even more special to me is that Mr. Broeg has signed the inside cover. I also own a signed copy of his Stan Musial biography. Very happy to add this to my collection!

Found this round wooden American Tobacco Co box. Is this the same company that did the baseball cards or a different American Tobacco company? Thanks

Same place today as the game I posted a nice school team photo dated on the back from 1907 can see a ball, mitt,catchers mask, and a nice looking ring bat... I have been lucky at this place...

Thanks guys. I really was floored when I saw it. The image itself was, to me at least, worth every penny I paid for it just by itself. Such a great shot. The funny thing is, who but me would realize that it was a cover image from an obscure French language turn of the century magazine? Who else would even care? It's like it was meant to be. So cool.

Hi Mark. It is the whole team. It’s a real photo of the 1910 team. Here’s a better one of the supplement.

Edit: actually it isn’t the whole team. It’s 15 players. Fred Clarke and Honus Wagner are both in the picture.

Picked up a photo from a PBA baseball team from my hometown Paterson NJ Sept 14, 1915

I’ve recently picked up some random Cabinet photos because I just think the pictures can be so cool.


A smaller cabinet. All appear to be in dress clothes. They are possibly at the base of a power line or oil rig.


On the back this one has written, “Green Bay 1917”. Love many things on this one. The big old stadium. The equipment. The guys with arms over each other’s shoulders. The little kid photo bombing while hanging onto the fence.


The back of this one says “Clarence Clendenin 2nd from left suit”. The flag and the pennant are great. I believe they are getting ready to hoist this new pennant up the pole just under Old Glory.

Just won this snapper. Awesome fantography shot of the Babe. I can just imagine the fan saying "Hey Babe" and Babe turns around...and the look on his face says a four letter word may have followed.

Picked up these Gerrit Beneker 'Baseball Magazine' items in Leland's last night.

In addition to the March,1912 issue that goes with the Cobb cover, I'm looking for the May, 1911 that goes with one of my other Beneker paintings. If anyone is interested in trading, I have the Baseball Magazines that go with several of the Beneker paintings auctioned off last night: 4-1912,5-1912,7-1912,8-1912

I won the Cobb study, not the magazine (still looking for it). The 'Detroit Number' proof sheet never made it to a magazine cover. I recognize Jennings, Cobb and Crawford. I figure Mullin and Donovan are in there somewhere as well:

1942 rookie type 1 photo used for 1948 bowman card

Lucky enough to add this carved mini bat to my Rockford Peaches collection. The bat looks to be made in 1945 by Helen Filarski who played for Rockford tin 45 and 46. She made it for her sister Grace.

This is a ball from what many experts feel is the greatest game ever pitched.
On May 26, 1959 Pirates pitcher Harvey Haddix hurled 12 innings of perfection against the Milwaukee Braves, before finally becoming the hard luck loser 1-0 in the 13th inning.

On hand in Milwaukee to witness the event was AP Sports Editor and beat writer Dave O'Hara. O'Hara had a storied and amazing career with AP.
