Several of you have contacted me regarding these color printing errors in this set. So, I decided to post this thread as a starting base
of info for this printing phenomena. Theoretically, all 252 cards in this set can be found with what I refer to as a SLATE background. Typically, though, any cards in the set that were printed with the GREEN, light BLUE, ORANGE, and YELLOW pastel colors are candidates to be found with a SLATE background. Here is an uncut complete sheet of the 3rd Series (cards #4, 74 - 108). The 17 cards on this sheet which have SLATE backgrounds are the more plentiful Lo #s cards with this color printing error. ![]() Duke Snider, Dick Sisler, and Larry Doby are examples of Hi #s with SLATE backgrounds. ![]() ![]() The following lists the SLATE cards in my 1949 BOWMAN collection...... Lo #s ------ 12 Michaels 75 E. Mayo 76 Nicholson 78 Zoldak 80 McCahan 82 Page 84 Campanella 87 Gumpert 88 Salkeld 91 Wakefield 93 Stevens 94 Vernon 97 Litwhiler 98 Rizzuto 102 Spence 103 Tipton 106 Early 107 Lake 109 Fitzgerald 111 Schoendienst 129 B. Johnson Hi #s ------ 163 McCollough 169 Heath 182 Peck 186 Kerr 187 Marchildon 190 Hearn 193 Trinkle 197 Lindell 199 Hughson 201 Sisti 205 Sisler 212 Hamner 213 Barrett 218 Kryhoski 221 Muncrief 225 Coleman 226 Snider 230 Galan 233 Doby 235 Russell 239 F. McCormick 240 Young 143 Dillinger (PRINT variation) 88 Salkeld (NOF variation) Also, I have seen Paige and Kellner. OK guys....this is a first start on confirming these elusive, silly SLATE cards. The High #'s are extremely rare with SLATE backgrounds. Show or tell us of your SLATE cards, and perhaps we can generate a more comprehensive list of these color printing errors. Oh man, just when I was getting close to completing the set with the known variations (name on front/no-name on front, script vs. print), now you have to tell me about a whole new set of them! Argh!

No sweat, the 12 variations in this set you are referring to were part of the regular printing. Illustrated here is my simulated 7th sheet, in which Bowman included these 12 cards to fill out their last 36-card sheet. ![]() So, collecting the SLATE cards are just a whimsical challenge to continue the hunt for 1949 BOWMAN's. Why do so many of the slate cards appear to be handcut?

I think a great many of them were handcut from sheets. However, Ted has testified before that he remembers as a kid pulling slate variations straight from the pack.

Photo may be tiny... but here’s a sheet of mine with slate background which also has the “ pink” background and colors ( rather than stark red). If Ted agrees.

Some of us old dudes who collected these BOWMAN cards recall opening waxpacks and getting various color errors. I vividly recall (as if it were just yesterday) opening a pack in the Summer of 1949 and finding a Phil Rizzuto with a "golden" yellow background color (instead of the normal orange color). I was very excited about this, since Phil Rizzuto lived only 2 blocks away from our home. And, was a really friendly guy. Here is an example of a Factory cut SLATE card....Muncrief ![]() TED Z T206 Reference . |

Besides the BB cards, the 1948 BOWMAN Basketball cards can also be found with SLATE backgrounds.
Here is an uncut Hi # sheet (cards #37 - 72) in which all the players are SLATE...... ![]() TED Z T206 Reference . |
