I just read that Bobby Doerr past away.He was 99.He was the oldest living HOFer,and was a great TTM signer,signing up to the end.RIP Mr.Doerr.

This thread was in the watercooler section but it seems only fitting that the news of the demise of our oldest living MLB'er would be on the front page of a primarily vintage forum. RIP Mr. Doerr.....Here is his rookie card...1937 Goudey R314 (from the OC website)

He was the last living player from the 1930's.

No one living right now played in the majors before September 3, 1941 when Fred Caligiuri made his debut for the Philadelphia A's. Only Chuck Stevens of the St Louis Browns is older than Caligiuri (by 124 days). They are both 99

Doerr played against Lou Gehrig. And made his debut 80 years ago. Quite a remarkable career and life!

RIP Bobby Doerr. I was bidding on his rookie card last night. Really sad to hear about his passing, one of the greatest Sox of all-time; the 1940s Doerr, Williams, Pesky + DiMaggio combo is legendary. I was watching this video the other day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlwxU0TJ98Y , it is fantastic to see 80 years of Red Sox all together at Fenway.

Doerr and Williams were signed from the same scouting trip. He was the last living MLB player from the 1930s. RIP.

Very sad news! Mr. Doerr signed for me many times TTM over the years, and included some nice extras like a signed HOF plaque, a card, etc.

Speaking of oldest living Major Leaguers, does anyone know where I can find a listing of oldest players? I am familiar with the Wikipedia list but that only runs 1-100. Is it possible to sort this information on Baseball-Reference or another site? I have seen football lists, but can't seem to find a reliable baseball list.

I am not a Red Sox fan but the video you shared was fantastic. I loved how all the players entered the field. I only wish there was a way to identify all of them. Seeing how many of the players have aged was very sad to watch. Highlight was seing Yastrzemski & Doerr. What was up with all of the players filming themselves with their phones?

I attended that game with my dad (now 82) - one of my favorite games I was able to ever attend with him. We were both lighting up at the sight of some of our favorites from all eras walking out on the field.

Never saw a video of it again since seeing it live that day - it was cool to watch again now - thanks for posting it....

Nooo! What a class act right up til the end. Tommy Henrich once said "Bobby was one of the few who played the game as hard as he did and retired with no enemies."

I could be wrong, but is he the last of the prewar HOFers?

Funny story. I had always wanted a signed example of one of those Cooperstown group photos of all of the inductees by the lake in the back of the hotel. Finally was able to pick one up about a year and a half ago. After a few months I was bored and decided to see if everyone in the photo had signed it. I counted 36 people in the photo and 35 signatures. Dammit! Well, I figured I would see who was missing and maybe try at some point to get it signed if the player was still alive. I looked and looked and finally figured it out. It was Bobby Doerr. The man who signed everything and anything. He missed out on this one. By the time I figured it out I had heard that he was in a nursing home, so I wasn't about to try to bother him to sign it. The one guy who didn't sign the damn thing turned out to be the most prolific of them all (maybe even moreso than Feller)!!

RIP Mr. Doerr. Class act indeed.

I mean...Chuck Stevens is the oldest living player but wasn't in a card set until 1952.

I'm jealous! In all seriousness though, the red sox did a great job organizing that event, everything was amazing: players, music and all. If I could I would buy advance tickets to 150th celebrations that might happen in 2051 and 2062.

It is sad seeing all the players aging, for the sox we have seen an entire generation of players retire recently, I'm not sure how many players we have left from our 2007 championship team. I'm not very old but I still "reminisce" about when Pedroia was the young guy of the team. I assumed the players were filming or photographing Mr. Doerr, Mr. Pesky and others, I might be wrong. I needed an excuse to watch it again anyway.

Yes, Red Schoendienst is now the oldest HOFer debuting in '45. We still have Chuck Stevens and Fred Caligiuri as our last pre-war ballplayers.
