I am beginning my journey to complete the 1970 Topps set. It seems as if this is one of the least popular Topps sets. I have read various reasons for this, but I would like to hear from some of you that like the set and why.
Thanks

I like the set. You will spend a bit for very nice examples, and even the high numbers will not break your bank. Aside from Ryan and Bench, with the other major HoF's, they are all affordable. Have fun with the journey and don't try to complete the set in a couple of months. I'm working on a very nice 73 set right now.

I do not care for the basic colors of the set nor the design. I think it is dull. It just seems a let down from the previous year which had some very colorful and bright cards as well as some nice rookies and Mantle's last card. |

I like this set. The photos are an improvement over 68 & 69.
My last card was Bob Robertson. The Seattle Pilots team card was more expensive than I expected.

Thanks for the replies. I also like the photos and especially the Munson card (nice one Mintacular!). I also think the Reggie Jackson card stands out.

I'm also working on the set in ex condition have about 100 cards with stars. Never collected a older set before so I decided to start with the year I was born. I like the contrast of the grey on colors. Good luck with the set maybe we can trade in the future.

The first packs I ever opened, so a sentimental favorite.
When I got back in the hobby this and '71 were the first sets I completed, and I too was a bit surprised at the cost of the Pilots team, but no card really cost much. I'm slowly working on a second set in all uncut sheets. ![]() ![]() can't collect a set without a pack and box either! ![]() ![]() Last edited by Griffins; 11-13-2013 at 10:08 AM. |

COOL pictures...
I personally love the set, it's also my birth year. My last card was the Bench as I was holding out for a really nice one. The Pilots card cost me as well. I think the photography is excellent and the gray doesn't bore me at all. I remember as a kid getting the Jake Gibbs card, my first ever 70 card, and thinking how COOL it was. As I was collecting the set it was pretty crazy to think some kid was opening these out of packs as I was a newborn... ![]()

Agree with Anthony that you need a pack with a set, but you certainly do not need a bulky box

By the way, while 1970 is not one of my favorites in terms of the regular set, for each year I also collect any insert or test sets. For 1970 there were several such sets, the 1970 Candy Lids ( tops to tubs of candy), the 1970 Posters ( pack inserts), the 1970 Scratch offs ( repeated in 1971),1970 Booklets ( pack insert), and the 1970 Supers. Plus, one of the toughest of all unissued test sets,, the enigmatic 1970 Cloth Stickers

Personally I love this set-it was the first one I collected as a kid and I had a whole slew of 'em back then. When I re-entered in the early 80's it was the first set I started again. A lot of folks dislike the gray fronts but I've always liked it. I also think the back is one of the best Topps ever produced.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am waiting on three lots to arrive that I won on eBay. Have been surprised at how little I have paid for them. Maybe this set will stay under the radar (and prices stay low) until I complete it, LOL.

Dave H and myself were working on trying to figure out if there were any SP's in any of these series. Especially the higher series, I believe you or someone else emailed me those sheets but I'd love to get another copy so we can verify our suspiciions in either direction

The first packs I busted as a kid were 1970s but I am not a fan of the set, unless the cards look like these:

Actually those cards look just fine Adam, as long as you're wearing the special glasses.

I find the color pretty drab, particularly the earlier series cards. I do however like the '70's primarilary because they are my all-time favorite card backs. I love the Seattle Pilots wearing the uniforms, particularly the glitzy home uniforms. Disappointed in how drab and boring most of the Mets cards are with the exception of Cleon Jones and Nolan Ryan. Worst vintage Pete Rose card. I love the A's team card with Joe DiMaggio sitting in the front row, looking less-than-regal in the green uniform; Weird Sparky Anderson card wearing the airbrushed SD Padres uniform; Awsome Willie Mays and Harmon Killebrew cards.

first year I remember buying baseball cards too! And Rich, Im the one who sent you the photos thru Dave. IIRC only the 3rd series had some DP's (excluding CL's of course) but have to check my notes when I get home, John

This indeed is true. John I think the only DP's would be on either semi high or high number sheet, although Anthony's 44 x 3 array could refute this. Were you able to rustle those up?

These were the 1st vintage cards I ever saw (either '75 or 76). My favorite all-time set.
Perhaps someone can help me....I missed out on buying a series 1 uncut sheet @ a show here in NJ several years ago. Does anyone know where I can get one? Thanx! |

Count me as a fan...the gray borders feel solid to me for some reason. And the backs are pleasant just because they're so easy to read.
Love the pics of the inserts, rack pack, sheets, etc. Thanks for sharing everyone.

well the right half of the 3rd series uncut sheet has finally surface. 22 cards printed 3 times, includes Carew and Red S. 33 cards are printed twice.

photos overcome it. The gray borders don't bother me as much as the blah script lettering. If you love a set, whatever the reasons, the card design issue just gets pushed aside. My favorite is 1968 and most collectors seem to dislike the burlap/wheatina borders. I don't even SEE those borders --just the great photos (amidst the numerous headshot and airbrushed caps. lol).
