I posted this in the August pickups looking for some feedback, and also on the August pickups in the memorabilia section, but still no feedback, so I thought I would start a thread asking about it. The following is what I posted in the pickup section.
I took a chance on it, I hope it is a type 1. What do you guys think? Is it something to get authenticated? It has a 30 day return policy, I have bought from this seller before with nothing but great transactions. Circa 1913 Chattanooga Lookouts, the photographer checks out, Wiles of Nashville, Tennessee. The Tennessee State Library has a collection of 60 items from Marvin Willard Wiles, photographer, who lived from 1883-1957, Wiles Photography Studio (Nashville Tennessee). So, what do you think? The listing said it came from the Fred Graf estate, he played for Chattanooga from 1913-1920. I think Graf is the guy back row fourth from the right, and I think Kid Elberfeld is front row second from right. I think this is the 1914 team. Does anyone recognize any of the other players? Here is a list of players for 1914: Mike Balenti Clyde Barfoot Ray Boyd Ike Caveney Elmer Coyle Murphy Currie Jewel Ens Carl Flick John Fox Fred Graf Stanley Graham Charlie Harding Roland Howell Baby Doll Jacobson Johnny Johnston Charles Lile Lefty Lorenzen Moose McCormick McFarland W. Morgan Pat Paige Quarders Bugs Reisigl Sammy Ross Doc Shanley Sindler Bill Sline Gabby Street Tink Turner I know Elberfield isn't listed with the 1914 team, but he played for them in 1913 and again in 1915, so I think he was there for this photo. This might be the 1915 team, but I have been trying to compare photos from the 1913, 1914, and 1915 teams, and the 1914 photos match the best. (full disclosure, I lifted the e-bay image from the auction)

Neat photo, Ed, looks good to me but can never tell for sure from a scan. Don't know if I would pay to have it authenticated, based on player content, not sure if the value would support the cost.

I was watching that. I thought maybe the top row second guy from left (w/ black sleeves) was Burleigh Grimes, dating this to 1913....but perhaps (likely) I am wrong. I'd love to hear other opinions of players on this piece including my likely misidentification.

Hi Ed,
Nice photo. A larger scan of the photo would helpful when you have it in hand. Looks like the 3rd player from the right in the front row is Gabby Street. How large is the photo? A scan of the back would also help. Here is Stanley Graham's C46 card for reference. Good luck, Patrick Last edited by Vintagecatcher; 08-25-2016 at 08:36 AM. |

I cannot comment on the type of photo but it is super cool! There's no way that's Engel Stadium- right?

Thanks for the comments, guys, here are some more scans that I hope you can use to help with the player IDs. I think this is a heck of a cool photo.

Looks like Stanley Graham to the left of Gabby Street and Baby Doll Jacobson standing behind Graham in the back row. Tall blond gentleman.

Looks like a 1914 image, the most obvious guys have been pointed out Baby Doll Jacobson was a pretty big guy, Gabby Street is in front of him and to the right. Mike Balenti is kneeling far left (he was an early Native American player as well). Nice piece with nice images, it shouldn't be too tough to name the others if you have some time.

Great image, funky old ballpark. Guy in first row second from left looks to me like Ike Caveney who played with Chat in 1914 & '15.

This is definitely the 1914 Lookouts. The man who is fifth from the left in the back row is my late Grandfather, William Sline. Chattanooga bought his contract from the Providence Grays of the Class AA International League in 1914. He appeared in 33 games for the Lookouts, completed 25 of the 32 he started for a 16 and 13 record. He negotiated his release as a free agent at the end of the season in order to return to his New England home. If anyone has any more information about his one year with Chattanooga I would appreciates learning more.
