I recently purchased this cigar box that has a team photograph of the Truxton Grays posed outside of the Hotel Kenney in Truxton, New York. In the top right of the photo is someone in a New York Giants (I think) uniform. Can anyone identify him?
Thanks!

Thanks guys. Funny - I thought Buck as well, but the mustache looked off to me! I don't have it in hand yet, so this is the best I can do:

From what can be seen it is consistent with Buck Ewing. Probably it's him - hopefully you can post a better scan when you get the item.

He looks like Bert Kenney. Kenney signed John McGraw to his first contract in 1890. They were close lifelong friends and maybe that is why Kenney wore a NY Giants uniform. McGraw often donated old uniforms to the Truxton town team. I might be able to help with the names of the players as I'm writing a book on McGraw's childhood days.

I also have a copy of another photo of the Truxton town team from this same time period of 1901-1909. Some of the players happen to be in both photos. The gentleman in the New York uniform also appears in this other photo. The team was known as the Truxton Stars in the early 1900's.
Comparing his photo to his earlier ones when he was on the 1881 Truxton Grays and 1890 Olean club tells me this is a match for Bert Kenney. Kenney was often the player-manager for the team after his minor league career finished. McGraw donated some of his old uniforms (Cedar Rapids and Gainsville, for example) to his hometown team as well as New York uniforms. He even paid for Kenney's expenses when he invited him on his World Tour with the Giants. |
