Is he supposed to be portrayed vertically or horizontally?

You should start a poll. My vote is horizontal.

If you do a search you will find at least one old extensive discussion of this. I don't think there was a consensus.

Yeah as I pointed out there, it's backwards unless he's Willie Mays chasing Vic Wertz's drive.

I made an image mockup with photoshop a couple years ago which proved it was vertical (or at least I thought so). I will see if I can dig it up later and post it.

Haha, ok, I found the original thread where we debated the Dunn pose:
http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=162940 The key here is that the T206 artists added a slight tilt to the Dunn image, which can mistakenly lead you to believe it might be horizontal. It's not. ![]() It helps to read the whole thread, if you're interested, but the post to which I was referring earlier is right here: http://www.net54baseball.com/showpos...1&postcount=52 Last edited by CW; 06-03-2017 at 03:01 PM. |

If one were to make a basket catch, one wouldn't do so with the arms so high above the head, it seems to me. So I don't buy the "the gloves were different" thing. Also, the head is just perfectly positioned for a horizontal shot. Coincidence? Maybe. I think it probably is vertical given that all the horizontals seem to be in a different series, but I wouldn't say it's overwhelmingly clear from the picture and the vertical theory does raise some problems.

its not terribly uncommon for the gloves depicted in old cards to not always be anatomically correct.

I think the Dunn card is either horivertical or vertizontal.

all six horizontal cards have a horizon line. Basically you see the edge of the earth from where they are. There is a background. There are a few vertical that show a horizon line (Shannon, Burke) but not many.

Thank you for posting this card CW. This card is all you need to see that the Dunn is NOT and odd pose for a vertical image.

I also like Ed's point about the horizon line being evident on all the horizontals. Jim R. also posted the Bay card in the Jack dunn poll thread from a few years ago, which has a similar pose to the Shannon. |

An interesting little tidbit I found out about Dunn on the web that might pertain to this orientation discussion:
When he (Dunn) was nine, a boxcar ran over his left arm while playing at a local railway. He was told by doctors that his arm had to be either amputated or risk death. He declined an amputation, but his arm was left crippled from above the elbow and couldn't lift the arm above his neck. Does this make the fielding position on his T206 more vertical or horizontal? I have no idea, but maybe someone here has some ideas. Brian |

To me, this would suggest it is a vertical orientation.
