19th Century Ring Style Baseball Bats

Interest generated by another thread prompted me to start this one that focusses on ring style baseball bats ranging from the 1860s-1890s.

I hope that everyone with an example in their collections will share it with the board so that we can all enjoy what, in my humble opinion, are some of the most interesting and visually appealing of all vintage collectibles.

Here is S trade mark league model ring bat 39" long. Nicest Maple ring bat I've ever come across

Here's another two bats from the collection...

1. c.1880s JW&Co. , Professional Model ring bat
2. c. 1880s presentation ring bat..."Eagle Prize Bat" awarded to the "Brooklyn Writer's Nine". Research seems to indicate that this bat was presented to a team of writers from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper.

Here's another, 38'' long...There appears to have been many types of "Standard" bats.

You're right on there, Joe...here's another of our "Standard" examples...this one is a painted end model.

Question:
Are bats with the end of the barrel painted considered to be "ring" bats?

I categorize/call those types of bat "painted end" models...not quite ring bats, but I've seen some that, to me, are just as desirable.

For us 19th C. equipment guys, here is my latest ring bat...picked up this past Friday.

36", uncracked, Regulation model with gold rings, and stunning orig. finish...made by L.B. & Co.

I have 4 bats to contribute to the thread. Tom has posted the pictures for me below.

1. Youth Bat, no maker marks, 2 rings on either side of center area, 29-1/2 inches long, 26 ounces, lathe marks on both ends.

2. Youth Bat, no maker but looks like Morrill bats that have sold, 9 distinct burn marks around barrel with 3-4 lighter marks that extend to handle, no lathe marks, 31-1/2 inches, 31 ounces.

3. Full size bat, Y in diamond in center area, two rings on either side of center area, E near barrel end with cap on end of bat, 33-1/2 inches, 37 ounces, no lathe marks.

4. Full size bat, J.W.&Co. center paint with League Model above and below maker and Trade on one side and Mark on the other, green and brown rings on either side of center label, 38 inches, 37 ounces, lathe marks on both ends.

Hey Jonathan, LOVE the bats!
19th century ring bats are some of the most visually appealing antique baseball items in my opinion, and I believe Spalding referred to their painted end models as "black band" bats.

Latest pick up of 19th C. equipment/memorabilia...I really couldn't be happier with the piece and think I've found a "keeper"...no damage, beautifully intact graphics, and 35"!
