Anyone see "Antiques Roadshow" last night? I believe it was a new episode and this 1902 Horner composite was featured. She gave an estimate of 10 to 15 grand. That sound right? I would think maybe higher. Very cool item with Plank and a baby-faced Connie Mack. I added a second screengrab to show the scale.

Did she say where it came from?

I think that is low. Chopped up that thing is worth north of 20K (indivudual photos of the players) so I would think 25k-30k is a more realistic estimate with the Plank alone being worth nearly what was quoted.

Somewhere in Indiana, if memory serves. The episode was taped in Indianapolis.
You can watch online. Here's the link. I think the composite came up about two-thirds of the way through the show. There were some really great items in this episode. Some piece of pottery a guy bought for $4.99 at a thrift store was appraised at $50,000 to $100,000. unbelievable. http://www.pbssocal.org/programs/ant...FdmEswodGUkCRw |

As to the value as it sits, 20-25K is probably the low end, with a few interested parties, 30+ quite easily. |

This item sits in a garage and looks great and we worry about lighting, temperature and humidity etc.

I agree with SB1 the value in this item lies mostly because it is complete and original team photo from Horner's studio. Chopping up the photo would not net a stack of Horner cabinets but a bunch of pieces of a team photo. As for condition sitting in a garage it could be fine or it could be ready to fall apart no way to know until a conservator takes it out of the frame. If I were seller I would consign as is. If I were a Buyer (NOT way out of my league) I would want to have condition disclosed. Great find glad it has made it's way back into the light of day.

Guys, I was in NO WAY advocating to chop this thing up, I was using that as a way to illustrate that the price was low. Often times old newspaper archives would do just that, seperate these photos out so they could be used in publications and the photo size more usable for art editors. Most of the really early Horner photos had their starts on a piece like this and you find them dismantled by newspapers 100 years ago. What I was saying was that EVEN in that form, they were worth more than the appraisal and a whole piece of course being worth much more.

Interesting that there was no mention of Waddell. Hall of famer in his own right who was the star of the team that year.

Not to high jack but does anyone know where I can find a picture of the Pittsburg team composite? I know there is at least one out there that sold at auction years ago and I lost my image of it. Great piece.

This one sold in Legendary for $18,000 in 2014. Came from Plank's estate. Again, not mine.

Thanks Kevin. I think I've seen some smaller modern reprints of that one for sale.
