I am not sure where Mr. Hogan got his batting tips but, every time I come to his card on ebay or elsewhere, I think he could have used a bit more batting coaching.... I mean, when I bat and miss the ball, I might not look like poetic "batsmanship" but this follow through doesn't look too natural at all...

There are a bunch of bad-looking swings on cards from the early 20th century. It makes me wonder how high the level of baseball really was back then if so many players seemingly had lousy form. Here's a card I plucked off eBay that shows one of those swings. I can't image generating much power hitting off one leg ...

it's not just a 19th century/pre-war thing!
for a guy with over 3,000 hits and arguably the best inside out swing of all time, you'd never know it with his follow-through on this card from 1992:

Here's some from the land of Zees. Obviously some cards in the group shots are of players that are not batting...just try to enjoy them anyway.

I like how "Downs" is looking straight up. Normally an instant recognition of a pop out. The Kashin in the first post just reminds me of a slap hitter like Ichiro.

Not a card, so apologies if this isn't appropriate for this thread, but the topic instantly put us in mind of former AAA star
and part-time Dodger JT Winsett, whose image on the cover of the April 25, 1938 edition of Life was recreated for the box lid of Bat-Em, a late-1960s game by Bayshore Industries: ![]() Looks painful... Winsett's actually an interesting and rather amusing story: http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/fd8d4931

[QUOTE=Leon;1612022]Now that is a follow through. Even Ruth looked uncoordinated sometimes!!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-BABE-RU...gAAOSwCGVX2dj- Babe Ruth was credited for the quote of "I swing with everything I've got. I either hit big or miss big." I think he would agree this was a "miss big" moment. ![]() |
