Wow. i was 7 years old and had yet to open my first pack of cards - a 1961 pack, clear if I remember, with a Billy Williams RC, with a piece of gum stuck to that card.

How did someone do that without a word processor in 1961?

Great post, thanks. Chuckled to see an offer to buy 1952 Topps 311 to 407 at 20 cents each!

Thanks for posting these, Leon. I think Card Comments is my favorite hobby publication from that era. It was professionally done (by Gordon Taylor, a leading dealer, who had a staff to help him), and was more substantial than The Card Collector, the other dealer-published card publication at the time. It had a lot more ads, which are the most interesting part for us today. It doesn't have the cutting-edge research of Card Collectors' Bulletin or Sport Hobbyist, but it gives a really good picture of what the hobby was like for most people.

Small world, one of the "New Collectors" from that issue has been buying items from my ebay store of late so there are still some of the Old-Timers out there that are still collecting! That was fun to see!

That was a great read. I loved the treatise about fairness, the mention of a lot of random sets that I collect, and especially Ross' high school picture. The bit about developing a standardized grading system was also really interesting. This is an interesting snapshot into the hobby which seemed to be really defining itself at that moment.
I wonder if there is any archive that has a collection of these publications. If anyone knows let me know. I'm going to poke around. Thanks for sharing. Fun. |

If you're talking about an online archive of old hobby publications, there isn't really anything like that. The Old Cardboard site has an index of articles in hobby publications, which you can search by keyword or narrow down by publication. http://www.oldcardboard.com/ref/BBC-...earchIndex.asp However, it only includes articles from a few publications in a limited number of years, and not all of the articles indexed are actually there on the site. On this board, I've posted a lot of articles from such publications, and some full issues. You can find them by looking in my profile at the list of threads I've started here: http://www.net54baseball.com/search....archid=1269652 These were scanned from my collection of old hobby publications, which includes complete or near-complete runs of most of the major ones (at least before 1990). If there's anything in particular you're looking for after looking through the things I've already posted, PM or email me. David Last edited by trdcrdkid; 09-06-2016 at 08:38 AM. |
