Safe Recommendations

I apologize as I know this has already been asked before, but any recommendations on home safes? Looking for something that is ...

- fire protected
- waterproof (primarily from home sprinkler system)
- tamper proof (largely)
- humidity controlled
- and with ample storage / shelves / etc.

Any suggestions?

Fort Knox seems to be a preferred brand. I actually bought a Champion and I've been very pleased with it. Pay careful attention to the fire rating. My fire rating is 1500 degrees for 60 minutes. Also pay careful attention to the number of locking bolts. Mine has 14.

Some people opt to anchor it to the floor. Mine is not. To me, there is not point given the weight. If someone can carry it off by themselves, I'll open the door for them. Delivery and set up may be included in the price, or it may be extra. Ask to be sure. I've moved mine a couple times and it's about $300 each time. Ouch!

If my home burns down my card collection will be a sad footnote. What I am most concerned about is some worker or guest in my home helping himself to a few vintage cards. Bought a $185 safe on Amazon that is just fine. Me and my 20 year old son could barely get it up the stairs.

Slightly off topic, but I put in some fat bubble wrap to fill the empty spaces in case of earthquake . I'd recommend that move if u live in Cali

Not sure there is better info out there than what is provided here.

I had a outfit in California build a safe for me years ago 36x26x60 1200 pounds big enough to hold most of my collection.

Good for an hour in a fire and fits between the studs in your wall.
Is recessed so you can hang a picture over it.

Dial/combo and key lock to open it.

I've been happy with my Liberty Presidential safe.

I have two Sentry safes purchased from Wal-Mart.

I'm not sure how much space you need but they suit my graded card collection just fine.

I have 59 standard-size PSA-graded cards and 13 SGC-graded cards in the smaller one and 86 PSA and 6 SGC in the larger one.

They do not have shelves, but I find them to have plenty of space for my needs.

I have the cards carefully packed with a layer of bubble-wrap between the cards and the safe 'roof'.

There were larger Sentry safes available.

They are fireproof and key-accessed.

As far as waterproof and humidity controlled...I have had no issues in those areas...owned the safes for about 4 and 5 years respectively.

I think that exactly where you keep your safe or safes would determine how they hold up (no pun intended).

I found a 1200 lb used, jewelers safe, at a local safe store. It rocks. It was around a grand delivered (approx 15 yrs ago)....

Nice safe...and at a great price.

FWIW, if you can find used, that's the way to go. A lot of people start off with a smaller safe and upgrade (trade-in) as they accumulate more stuff, so used safes aren't that hard to find.

One thing I like about this approach is you can grab the safes and take them with you in an emergency like flood waters coming or a wild fire. When we had a wildfire near our house, I just hoped my heavy fire safe would protect the contents long enough if the house caught on fire. The thing I don't like, is these safes are pretty easy to open. They will keep away the thief who just spots an opportunity to quickly steal something, but these small safes wouldn't stop someone who was more determined.
