I just picked up a massive scrapbook covering the Chicago Semi- Pro League from 1907-1912. While few know about this league today it is significant in that it was one of the first integrated leagues in the 20th century. While the league team were not mixed, black teams (most significantly the Leland Giants) played in the same league as all white teams (including one managed by Adrian Anson- which seems to show his feeling on face changed over the years. This might be generous he may have just needed the money and saw a good opportunity) The league also featured famed teams like the Logan Squares and show that at this time the line between pro and semi- pro really wasn't really based on talent. The coverage also details the early cuban teams that came to the states. The Cubans featured future major leaguers like Armando Marsans and the first mentions of Jose Mendez (often as a short stop) The scrap book has literally thousands of box score (probably almost 100 from the Leland Giants) so if any one wants me to look up roster info I would be happy to due so.

Wow! That's really great find! Is there anything on Percy Skillin? He was a great pitcher from Oak Park and was the ace of Dartmouth College 1905-07. Still holds many pitching records there. Skillin played in the Chicago City League during the summer and unwisely used his real name which cause all sorts of problems when he returned to college play. My wife's family are all Dartmouth men and I made sure I put him in my book that came out last year - but I'd love to see if there's anything new in the scrapbook. You can read about ol' Percy HERE
