T206 Dahlen - victim of the cut or scrap

I've had this card in my collection and just always wrote it off as trimmed top edge, more like hacked up. Not trimmed to decieve, obviously. The top edge was probably the victim of a pair of scissors.

However, I ran across the card again and I've re-examined it.
The card is oversized both ways. When card is measured top to bottom, the jagged edge is above the standard card size.
When looking at the jacked up top edge, there is a portion of the edge that is "bunched up," which is similiar to '60s Topps cards that have wavy factory hand cut edges. Hard to explain in words but if you have seen them before, you know what I'm talking about.

Is there an outside chance this card is scrap or just a hacked edge like I've thought all along?
Just wanted to hear the opinions of the scrap guys.

Not a scrapper, but I have extra tall T206 cards even taller than yours, and also have some tall ones that have also been sloppily trimmed on one border. My bet is not scrap.

That was my original thinking, too. The other edges looked like normal edges.

I usually get a sense for a partial product and that looks fairly complete. Another vote for no.

you guys hit it 1000% on the head......great trouble shooting....

report:

all 3 edges are factory cut......top border is "after factory hand cut"....scissors maybe??? big 'ol dog ears also on top a tell tale sign...a lot of T206 were "tall".....my guess is it didn't measure more than 1/16 " tall.....not nearly enough to get it into scrap consideration...but at least we are all looking

I agree, it's a finished card. For some reason it was hacked along the top border. Still, it's a nice Dahlen.

Interesting card.

Trimming to fit a page or holder is the most likely explanation, and with no other flaws it's not scrap as we usually think of it.

However - The lower edge is also not straight, and the unevenness somewhat matches the top edge. I'd say only somewhat because of wear, and it may have been a close match when new.


This sort of edge can actually be a factory cut. The blade cuts through the stack of sheets and into a sacrificial strip- wood back then, usually plastic now. If the strip starts coming apart, or if some debris gets on the strip and remains between the table and the stack of sheets the pressure from the plate that holds down the stack can bend the sheets leading to a cut that isn't straight.
Usually there's a bit of creasing near the spot where the cut changes.

Here's a card with just that sort of cut. And light creasing right at the change.

Agreed. However, a lot of people on this board do not want to hear that. Rather than taking the time to learn about factory cuts, they dismiss any anomaly as being trimmed.

That is the point I was trying to make in this thread when I said people were "making assumptions based on the wavy cut" about the Cobb below.
