Now this is a pre-war subject worthy of discussion on the main board.
An SGC A, t206 Wagner sells for over $2.5mm in Heritage last night. Wow.... https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c...=MyBids-101116 Is this the new baseline for a Wagner or is this case of a bidding war gone to extreme? Was it Heritage (vs a different AH), or the card’s provenance, or any other unique factor? Personally, I feel that if a Mike Trout goes for $2mm (even a “1 of 1”), than this is very a correct price for a t206 Wagner; that said, I don’t see how/why the Trout would go for $2mm. Anyway, an authentic t206 Wagner closing at over $2.5mm is worthy of discussion on the hobby’s largest vintage chat board. So let’s discuss..... |

I'm not in a financial position to buy any legit Wagner T206; however, I'd
certainly agree that if Mike Trout can pull 2M, even an "A" Wagner should beat it- the sense of proportion is proper . Halcyon days for folks who sell these! Trent King |

Not sure how accurate HA's "Make Offer" feature, the seller is trying to sell the Wagner at $3.78M now? or that "Make Offer" feature enabled by default and it auto generate that offer price?
T206 Wagner is now a CEO card and not touchable by regular collectors. (I am doing fine and happy with my T206 Wagner with error and graded by PSA) |

That feature is enabled by default immediately at Heritage.

Just a note, at least IMO, the SGC-A Wagner just sold for $2.5M is in a much better condition than other Auth Wagners. I did brought up before this $2.5M Wagner deserve more than an Authentic grade but someone also pointed out it has been trimmed on the bottom thus it got that A grade.

For $2.5mm, I'd need something a little more presentable.
but relative to Trout, it certainly makes sense. Last edited by Oscar_Stanage; 02-28-2021 at 08:51 AM. |

Thanks Scott and Jeff, but I am not looking for congratulations- when I bought mine, I was positive it was a smart move and I was super confident I would make money.... in 20 years!! What has happened over night is crazy. But at least it makes sense in light of all this other non-sense with 1950-modern cards. The t206 Wagner is still king and that was proven last night. But holy crap!

The "new shiny stuff" has not been the only area setting records. Key vintage cards have also been blowing the roof off old sales. The Wagner is but one example. Post war, but a 1961 Dice game Mantle sold for almost 400K (last sale 144K in May 2018 - same exact card), 1933 Goudey Ruth #144 PSA 8 - Almost 300K! Last sale - 67K July 2019.
A lot of "deep pockets" looking for the "cream". I for one see this continuing for a bit on low pop high demand cards. |

The card only goes up. If a Jordan 10 is 600k you could argue it’s cheap.
I think it just signifies how real the money that is flowing into cards is. Like others congratulations on owning one. |

This to me is far less crazy than $600k for a Michael Jordan card. This also presents very well for the grade IMO.

What would a signed Wagner card sell for in this market? Not the T206 but another old one, like an E card?

Rarity is far from the only determiner for price. In fact, some cards are too rare for their own good: obscure.
I knew of a person who had a cloth tintype: a tintype on cloth instead of metal and mounted in form of a CDV. I knew they were possible but that was the first and only example I have ever seen. They guy had troubles getting a fair price, as almost no one knew or understood what it was. |

Pretty sure one of our board members has a signed M116. It's the only signed tobacco era Honus I've ever seen. No idea as to its cost when last sold, but guessing it pushes well into 6 figures now. Seems many signed vintage cards, like some of the more common Goudey HOFers haven't followed the recent upward trend, but the prime stuff has shot through the roof. That signed Wagner would definitely qualify as prime.
