Rediscovered this early-mid 70's article while moving our collection into storage. Posted in another T206 thread but figured the rest of the forum might like to see

I wonder who owns that Wagner Mastro bought. I don't recognize that Wagner unless it got tucked away for the past few decade. That Wagner should also show some glue stains on the back if I have to guess....(but never know since it was once owned by Mastro

I think this one is the copy that ended up in the Hall of Fame, but I may be mistaken?

Very cool I love these old-time articles from the early days of card collecting. It's easy to see how something like that could happen back then finding a Wagner for pennies.

I'm most interested in the phychoanalysis in the article. 1. Collections are an extension of ego. AND 2. Collecting is a means of trying to control your environment. Hmmm . . . . |

came across this old post and recognised a name from the past.
dick ruess, the person quoted in this newspaper article, i remember dick from the mid 70's. used to trade with him at the chicago, cincy, and or indy shows in the mid 70's. i do not remember him talking like the article portrays and wonder if he was a psych professor, sociology prof, or??? based on the comments he had in the article. pretty funny. dick was an advanced collector and a pleasant guy, he had quite a passion for cards and related. i had picked up some mid 50's dixie lids baseball players and had them at my show table trying to figure out what they were worth. he was frothing over them as they were quite scarce at the time and we did some business. i heard dick passed on many years ago. i still recall his bushy red hair and beard and that he had lived in michigan. time waits for none of us. jsq |

I misspoke. I was thinking of the Met, not the Hall of Fame. It is mounted a lot like Burdick's, but it is a different copy.

The only thing that jumps out at me is the horrific grammar in the headline. It makes me cringe!!
"Baseball Card Collectors: They're Rare Breed Indeed!" Who forgot to add the "a" after "They're"????? Yowza!!!

great read but I think it was sleazy of the guy to only pay .20c and not give her reasonable value of the wagner.
