This thread is a Zeenut free for all. Post scans of recent pickups or old favorites below, or pose Zeenut thoughts / theories / questions.

What Z projects are you working on? Full years? Team subsets? Player subsets? Are there Z cards so elusive for you that you would like to just see a scan? I have been chasing Seattle Zeenuts for about 7 years. I would enjoy just seeing a scan of 37-38 Gabrielson (Sea) or 37-38 Muller (Sea).

I still find it shocking that no actual Zeenut packaging is known to have survived. Surely something has to be out there??

For those of you with 1911s, how many do you have with the "J.J. Collins" stamp? My only stamped 1911 is below, I know there is at least one other variation of the stamp.

Finally, after being at the top of my Z want list for years, my recent Z pickup is below.

I collect 1911 also. Have one JJ Collins stamped back out of 120 or so. Need 2 to complete the set.

Also have put a run together though not all with coupons as Leon did.

No packaging found in all these years. Back stamps. Maybe they weren't packaged...just given out. Steve's stamp supports that theory at least for the 11s.

Or the packaging was not the traditional candy box that we picture these in.

Stories OK, right Andrew....

In 1928, former Chicago White Sox pitching prospect, Elmer Leifer, was signed by the Cle Elum-Roslyn Miners of the Central Washington League. Leifer had lost his eye in a collision with Travis Jackson in 1922, but had a pretty decent career as a pitcher in Montana, Canada, and eastern Washington throughout the 20's. Great SABR bio on him. He had one Zeenut card, 1919.

Leifer, instead played outfield for the Miners that season. He was beat out for the starting spot by Jimmy Claxton. Who, of course, had the above 1916 Zeenut. Pretty decent one-two punch for a lower rung of organized baseball....

Leard is king of the goofy Zeenuts, but here are a few more, including a recent pickup of the Eddie Gaedel of the PCL, Dick Bayless (of course the Portland Cox as shown is a definite contender--pardon my euphemisms).

I also collect Seattle Zeenuts, although I'm not as serious about it as Andrew. Of my 108 Zeenuts, none have a back stamp although one of them has a typed name (remeber typewriters?) on the back -- TOM CHRISTIAN

I like the ones where you can see the full uniform front. My only 3 but hope to add more in the future. The Mitchell has a cool old car in the background. That was my first one and it's what drew me to it in the first place.

I love Zeenuts and focus on collecting sets. I've completed 1931 and am two away from 1932. I'm trying to accumulate 1915, 1916, 1920 and 1933-36. I also collect cool poses from other years.

At first, I wanted to get one from each year including a HRK. I did that and then I focused on picking up certain cards that I wanted.

Since we have this nice Zeenut thread (thanks Andrew), I thought I would post this again. Zeenuts were the target of many of Buck Barker's pens and pencils over the years.

Thinking more about Zeenut packaging, you don't see many Zs with candy stains or stains at all on the cards. Looking at the Zeenut sheet music below you see a "delicious treat" that looks rather large and messy. Since Zs don't really have staining problems, it seems likely the "treat" wasn't touching the card. Point here is that the packaging would have to be relatively large to house both the card and that rather large treat pile shown on the sheet music, while also keeping the card protected from staining. From the Horne book amongst other sources it seems the cards were inserted "one per box" of candy. Maybe the size of a double height box of modern Junior Mints?? Who knows, maybe some day a box will surface -- until then one of the many unsolved Zeenut mysteries. . .

I collect only Barbee cards in the ZeeNuts....1929-31....I look for them on eBay occasionally....have 8-15 of each year so far

Quite a few candy boxes of the 1910s, this one being 1912, would have physically been able to hold the Zeenut E136/E137 / D310 size cards. This box was put out by Bishop and Co. and is approximately 10" x 5" in size. I don't know if any cards would have come in it though as most of their cards were smaller.

BTW, love that ad Andrew. Looks so tasty!! I believe I have a copy also.

Leon....The Calarab box is most likely from the 1920's. Bishop marketed hundreds of products including jams, jellies, crackers and candy. The five cents chocolate boxes sized just larger than a Cracker Jack box are the most likely recipient of the insert card. The box that I have perfectly fit an E-221 when the card is folded (as most E-221's are). I have a slightly different Calarab box, along with a wooden box, although I do not believe that either ever held the cards

Thanks Mark, I was only going by the copyright and other exact ads I have seen with this box from circa 1912. This ad is from 1914 and here is the box you might be speaking of...

Thanks for posting the ad Leon. Thats the first mention of a Chicago office that I've seen. Primarily used for their packaged goods (peanut butter, jams,etc) rather than their candy. The "candied figs" are different as they had enough preservatives to stay fresh for a few months. Those Calarab boxes have turned up in different regions of the country. Also, the San Diego factory still exists (the building not the business). It was converted to an Antique mall in the late 70's, then renovated in the last decade. One of the first buildings to undergo renovation in what is now the gaslamp district / old downtown San Diego. San Francisco's factory (not listed in your ad) was destroyed in the '06 earthquake

It is ego pricing so when anyone does a Pre-War search and sorts by "Price: highest first" this listing tops the list. The claim can be made it is the most expensive card in its class. It has been there for many many months and will remain until the price is lowered to a reasonable amount, it is de-listed, or hell freezes over.

One of my favorite cards in my collection, Blaine "Kid" Durbin. Durbin was a bit player for two seasons for the Chicago Cubs, but those two seasons were 1907 and 1908. Two years of note to Cubs fans...
