Default First Day Cover?

I see a lot of signatures on first day covers? What exactly is a first day cover?

Its an envelope, usually w/ a cachet (artwork) that is issued the 1st day of the stamp.
And usually correlates w/ a specific location. The 1939 100th anniversary of baseball has the Cooperstown postmark. The Marilyn Monroe stamp has a Hollywood postmark.

I have a couple that my dad had. He gave them to me and I got them signed. I could only find one, but I will look for the other and try to post it later.
