There seems to be a lot of interest in ranking the Topps product over the years. Since I completed all the Topps sets of the 1960's I've moved on to other sets from that decade, so here's a new poll.
What's the best NON-TOPPS BASE SET of the 1960's I tried to list one for each year but that's not really accurate, and since several of the sets are near identical in design over many years I just picked one year to place them but you can rate them on the entire run if desired 1960 Leaf 1961 Fleer Baseball Greats 1961 Post 1962 Post 1962 Fleer Baseball Great 1963 Post 1964 Topps Giant 1964 Topps Stand Ups 1965 (et.al) Bazooka 1966 (et. al) Kahn's Weiners 1969 Milton Bradley 1969 Transogram Others I tried to just stay with well distributed sets (no test sets, no insert sets, or super regional sets) i don't know how to do an actual physical poll so guidance will be accepted. |

I would have voted for the 59 set, but that one is 1950's. The Bazookas were very colorful (when on full boxes). Contained good photos of most of the players and were a great marketing hook to get kids to buy gum. They are incredibly challenging to collect in full box form and aside from my Clemente collection are my favorite sub collection!

My vote. Inexpensive, so anybody can have a set. Plentiful and easy to find.
60 cards - 20 Hall of Famers plus a few others - Oliva, Pinson etc... |

Photography wise it's the '64 Giants. Design wise I have to go with the '64 Stand Ups.

The 1964 Topps Giants are gorgeous, but I really like the 1963 Fleer and 1962 Post sets-- 1969 Topps Super too if considered eligible.

'64 Giants-one of the best sets ever IMO.

I particularly enjoy both the Post Cereal and Bazooka sets--all years. The 1962 JELL-O is technically a regional, but I admire that one a lot, too.

Much thanks to Drew who helped me add a poll to this thread.
If I missed a good set add it to the thread! |

Mark,
Great topic. I like most of the choices, but voted for the Post/Jello cards. I only have Hank Aaron's Post/Jello cards at this point, but I am thinking about beginning one of the sets. These cards that came on boxes are really beginning to intrigue me. I find it very cool that kids looked for their favorites on cereal/food boxes, begged their moms to buy them, then took the time to cut out and save them. Something very "Americana" about these scenarios.

the 60's and 70's are just great fun for collecting.
There is just so much great stuff from Topps inserts and odd ball issues to food issues and anything else. Small size cards/stickers. Oversize cards. Hard to find and expensive. Easy to find and cheap. |

I voted bazooka but my favorite would be 1968 topps action stickers in full panel form .

that was my thought too- you've got '61-62 Fleer split into 2 years, but left out '63 Fleer.
My vote would be a toss up between '63 Fleer and '64 Giants. |

1963 Fleer, followed by '64 Topps Giants for me.
(I didn't vote in the poll because I didn't see '63 Fleer listed). Last edited by BradH; 07-18-2015 at 10:12 AM. Reason: Typo |

Wow, can't believe I missed putting the 63 fleer set in the poll. I only had 10 spaces and missed it.
I'd consider that one as well. I split the Fleer Baseball Greats because the sets are do different, but if I could edit the poll I would combine those. |

If you've never availed yourself of seeing them, you really are in for a treat. When I was nearly 8, those commercials made a big impression on me. Much as I loved my Topps, they did not air kid TV commercials. I loved those Post commercials and so I guess you could say Post were the most with me. ![]() |

I just realized you have Kahn's on there- if you're going to include regionals you should include Bell Brands and Morrell's as well. I'd respecfully suggest relaunching this poll, and including only National issues- Topps, Fleer, Leaf, etc. Then doing a separate one for regionals Given that '61 and '62 Fleer share the same design and I've never heard of anyone calling those 2 separate sets I'd consider combining them on the poll as well. |

Anthony-- my guess is he meant 1960 and 61/62 because he mentioned them as having different designs
Agree the poll mixed National and Regional issues Last edited by ALR-bishop; 07-19-2015 at 11:26 AM. |

I greatly enjoy collecting the Post cereal cards, mainly for the almost endless search for the variations. A very close second for me is my acquired love of the 68 MB set.

Another possible entry. The game was likely available on a National level. Or, they could all be viewed as just variations of the base Topps set, not just the Cox and Brinkman. There is also a true variation within the MB set itself...sort of.

I always thought the '64 Topps Giants were the perfect cards for autographs. They were large cards, had semi-portrait type photos, and a great unobtrusive space for the autograph.
