Sorry about the poor photo quality - card is in a penny sleeve and I am using my crappy phone...
I can find info on this set but nothing on this particular card? Who are these players? When I look at the roster nothing seems to match Kissinger & Moore? I would love to here your thoughts. I think it is a great image and it looks like a Huge Medicine Ball on his head! |

Not sure of the Kissinger fellow on left, but that's definitely Albert 'Pumpkin Head' Moore on the right.

Eddie Moore is on the right. Kissinger I have never heard of, but it's intriguing.

They appear to be wearing 1925 Pirates jerseys. The tall player isn't immediately recognizable like Moore is, with a lanky body like that I can't imagine him being anything but a pitcher.

Basically the same series as the La Morena cards, from 1928. The checklist might be updated better than what I have here as its the same for both sets. Hope this helps some. Harder to find but they do come up once in a while, I've owned a few of the Ruths. Leon has a Ruth/Cobb if I remember correct.

As a big Tabacalera La Morena fan, it's cool to see these Sociedade cards. From what I've heard and others have mentioned on this thread, it seems like the set is from El Salvador, just like the Tabacalera series. But I have heard that they could have been from Portugal. Seems like the Sociedade set was made first, and then the Tabacalera set used the same images but hand tinted them. Here's an example of a Tabacalera card I own. The really cool thing is how unique these two sets are (Sociedade seems rarer), and the fact that the images used in both sets are exclusive to those sets. And that's the first I've ever seen of the card you're sharing. (And it makes me think there should be a hand tinted Tabacalera version around somewhere

Could it be George Kissinger? He was a minor league player who played for Waynesboro in 1925. Not sure of their affiliation, but Adam Comorosky also played for Waynesboro in 1925 and appeared with the Pirates the following season.

I found this article from the Sept. 4 1925 Reading Eagle. One thing I have noticed about these cards is that they do sometime get the identification of the players wrong. So far this is the closest thing we have. Thank you Packs.

The La Morena cards have been known longer and in my experience are somewhat easier to find than the Sociedade cards. The checklists are the same as far as I can tell. Other than the shared checklist there is no indication I am aware of that the manufacturers were the same or which came first. Many of the Sociedade cards in collections today originated with Portuguese sellers, which makes sense since one of Portugal's colonies was Angola and the language on the cards is Portuguese. I have never seen one offered by a seller in Angola; for that matter I've never seen a La Morena offered by a seller from El Salvador, either.

That's true, Leon. And I like their use of action shots, which is pretty unusual prewar:

For card #117, I think it's very debateable whether that is Gehrig on the card. You only see the player's back, so it could be anyone. Last edited by glchen; 07-14-2015 at 10:27 AM. |

We had a discussion of this card awhile ago: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...hlight=lazzeri Almost certainly not Gehrig, IMO, if for no other reason that Gehrig followed Ruth in the batting order, and everyone in this picture is looking at further action in the field or on the bases, meaning after Ruth scores, either Gehrig is behind him on the bases or he already made an out--he would not be in the on-deck circle with some other runner on the bases, nor would he have scored ahead of Ruth. Other indicators make me believe it is not Gehrig as well, probably Lazzeri or Meusel.

I think it's fascinating we are still expanding checklists of 75-125 yrs old cards.

The same company produced another multi-sport set around the same time but I've never seen a baseball subject. Of course, I've only seen the cards come up once and it was just a handful so we're left to speculate. The other set has a white border around all of the cards as shown below. The seller stated that the set consisted of a few hundred cards.
