Hello,
I have a chance to go to Rochester this weekend for a birthday trip to see the Red Wings play. I have never been there and was wondering if you guys could give me some advice. Is it a nice place to go ? Any card shops ? Any help would be great. Thanks !

Although it is not directly related to Rochester, the book, The 33rd Inning, would be a good read for the trip, since Rochester is one of the teams. Great book.

For a minor league stadium, Frontier Field is very nice. Fireworks after the game every Friday and Saturday. If you like BBQ, there's a restaurant about a 2 minute drive away called Dinosaur BBQ that's great (gets crowded early). Another place nearby that's nice is called Tony D's (pizza)...on the river, pretty good food...also gets crowded early.
Not sure about card shops in the area. Adam |

It used to be that when you asked someone from Rochester where they worked, you never asked what company employed them, you simply asked what department they were in, because 'everybody' worked at Kodak. It's a shame how that mammoth corporation just went *poof* and disappeared one day. Yowza.
Anyway, sorry for the tangent, make sure you head over to Lake Ontario for some fishing or boating. Beautiful on a summer night!!

If you're looking for a place to eat and have a couple of beers, check out the Genesee brewery / brewhouse. Great food and a neat setup. You can sit outside and eat and it provides a cool view of the falls on the Genesee River.

We'll second the recommendation on Dinosaur BBQ, which has a lot bigger menu than just BBQ. Excellent burgers just the start.
Downtown Rochester has a peculiar layout, straddling the Genesee River, but it's surprisingly easy to get around if you have a map and know where you're going. Frontier Field has a very good reputation as a Triple-A ballpark. A pre-game autograph booth (selected Red Wings) is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and the Friday and Saturday games are followed by a fireworks show. Friday the 31st has a "Hallowe'en in July" promotion, Saturday the 1st commemorates the 1980 US Olympic hockey team (three members of that team will attend) with an auction of auto'd sweaters, and kids can run the bases post-game on Sunday the 2nd. Pretty much everything you need to know about Frontier Field is available at the RedWings' website: http://www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t534 Can't recommend for or against any of the several area shops purporting to deal in sports cards, but here's one list of possibilities: http://www.yellowpages.com/rochester...ds-memorabilia If you've any interest in antique games or toys, or if you've got young kids along with you, we highly recommend the Strong Museum [ http://www.museumofplay.org/ ], which has appeal for both adults and kids.

Dinosaur BBQ is in an old train station and has a great view of the water. And the BBQ is great!

g/f is from Rochester and we went a few years ago, she said it has taken a big hit over the years but there are some descent areas and the people are nice. of course like any city that was hit by the bad economy, it has a rough area.
Niagra Falls is about an hour and 15 min drive and well worth it, Toronto blue jays are another hour and 15 mins past that and although they weren't in town, the stadium is cool coincidently, she worked for Kodak in the executive office way back when... |

One other place: If you have time to drive an hour or so, Letchworth State Park is amazing! Three waterfalls, one of which is pretty darned impressive. A lot less hassle than Niagara, with lots of parking and pretty sights.
