![]() ![]() Had a very good Alameda last Sunday…got there bright and early and started my usual methodical front to back row after row route…then I stopped and thought….I rarely find anything here…what difference does it make how I hit it…So I walked up the middle and wandered rows randomly…which I never do…within a half hour I found the Olympics tryouts poster above…I knew the dealer….from Reno…usually deals in a lot of western stuff…railroad, gambling, Native American, etc…and almost always has vintage auto racing… ![]() I spotted the poster standing upright inside his van and zeroed right in…He goes…you can have that for $100.00…I didn’t even bargain…flipped him the $100.00 and said thanks…No year but it didn’t take much research to learn Stanford hosted it for the 1932 Olympics…little mangled but not bad… ![]() Later I found the Aunt Jemima sign for $50.00…then after Alameda I had some business in San Jose…Afterwards I went thru the antiques stores on West San Carlos Ave…There’s like three in a row….two small ones and a mall…again I never find anything there…So I buzzed thru the two small ones and started on the mall…I was on the last row…almost done and out of there…and Looked up high in a dark corner area that that was a little hidden…. ![]() ![]() Up high on the wall I saw what looked like an unusual huge framed photo that was hard to make out at a glance...but it kind of looked like a rowing regatta…I made my way to it...got my glasses on and read the engraved metal title plate at the bottom…it was a rowing regatta alright…the world series of rowing regattas…”HARVARD WINNING HENLEY REGATTA 1914”… ![]() ![]() ![]() It was in a very nice period frame…priced $150.00…So I went up front and said I wanted to ask about a “photo” in the back…guy says sure how can I help you…I said what’s the best you could do on it…he goes…how much you want to pay?...I said I want to pay $100.00…he says it’s yours…I never saw someone so anxious to sell something…I could tell he thought absolutely nothing of it…he said as much he bought it for the frame and was glad to see it go to someone who appreciated it…said it came out of an estate in a very nice home in Palo Alto… ![]() I could see the photographers signature in the lower right corner with an N.Y. after it…so I sensed something was up…Turns out it’s signed by Edwin Levick…who appears to be well known for nautical photos…At 32 1/2" tall x 26 3/8" wide it's a monster...I don't recall ever seeing anything like it...I suppose the vantage must be about a mile from the horizon to the finish line! ![]() ![]() ![]() Below are a couple other shots I took at Alameda ![]() ![]()
