Everett Lamar "Rocky" Bridges was an infielder for my hometown Washington Senators back in 1957-58 when I was growing up, and he was a fan favorite because of his hustle. I just learned from this obituary in today's Wash. Post that Bridges passed away in late January. I think everyone will get some laughs from reading this obit, even those who aren't old enough to have seen him play.

I loved this article - how great to get that much of a write-up! Sounds like Rocky was a great guy.
BTW, did anyone else notice that the author of the piece was described as having written obituaries for the paper since 2004? I wonder what sort of a personality is required to do something like that for so long... |

Rocky was funny guy. Seems strange - unless you can remember Casey Stengel - that he was picked as a spare outfielder for the 1958 AL AS squad. Rocky only hit .263 with five HR for the Senators that year, while his teammate, Roy Sievers had a career year, with a .295 BA, 39 dingers and 108 RBI. Another Washington teammate, Jim Lemon, finished with 26 homers and 75 RBI, so you have wonder why Stengel would select a banjo hitter instead of far more worthy Senators to sit the bench. But, then there were six Yankee subs selected for the bench in that game, so - Stengelese, indeed.

Mr. Bridges was extremely pleasant to his fans, always obliging to sign autographs.
