This is my one and only. I've never been able to ID this guy or his (RF) team. Early long bat.

You may be the only tintype collector on the forum. I only have two. The team one features an early catcher's mitt and the catcher has two early gloves. The other one is probably 1865-70 - picked it up because of the crystal clear image and the girl is hot.
Also, I think my bat is longer than yours, and the cute girl has her hand on the knob ![]()

This is the closest I have to a tintype, a daguerreotype of a boy with a ball.

I'm not sure those letters are RF. It's quite possibly KC for Kansas City or Knights of Columbus, but this may pre-date Knights of Columbus teams since the fraternal org was only founded in 1882 and didn't really grow huge (spread across the country) until 1905. I'm thinking the tail to the C which you think is an F might just be connecting fabric or a thread out of place.

George- Love the six player pose. It is almost perfectly symetrical.

I always went with RF since the letters on his bib seem to support the same. |

Sorry for the poor (small) image quality, but here is a sampling of tin types from our 19th Century Base Ball Collection...Of most note is the studio posed, double paned, action shot of the two players with ball and bat.

Only three, but all related. And pretty funny.
First one a ballplayer Second one the player and I think his wife? Then a group shot. With at least one person who seems VERY unamused with the whole baseball thing. It's possible they're all actors from some play or something that involved baseball. Perhaps a vaudeville type comedy? Or........Maybe they're a bit drunk and the woman right of center in the last one isn't about to let them forget it any time soon. Steve B |

Steve, I love the relationship of those first two photos. The props and the player are positioned exactly alike in both photos, but the photographer actually moved both a few feet to make room for the woman, with great attention to having them look exactly alike in both photos.

I never noticed that. It is pretty neat. I always get distracted by the expressions. I haven't seen too many tintypes of any kind with anything more than the rather blank "I can't move and mess up the photo" expression. That probably makes these later than they seem.

I guess this topic isn't limited to baseball....so here is some football players. The earliest known football photo and the only football tintype I have ever run across (c. late 1860's to 1870's).
