My dad bought this sometime around when I was born, hung it in the kitchen. And it basically stayed there until my parents moved to a different part of town last year. I can't count the amount of times I'd just stare at this thing. It's no coincidence that I grew up loving these kind of players just as much as the modern ones, and no coincidence some of my favorite cards are on this particular poster.
Just made me wonder, do you have a particular piece of memorabilia or something similar that you grew up with, something that 'rubbed off on you' and influenced the collector/fan you are today? |

I can trace many of my earliest vintage wants to this thing. The cards shown on the binder cover (especially the '53 Mays), and some of the little collecting booklets that came with it.

Cool poster. I wish I had something like that growing up but didn't. It probably would have got me interested in pre-war cards sooner.

That poster was in my bedroom growing up, and a newer framed one hangs in my hallway.
In addition to that poster, Classic Baseball Cards: The Golden Years, 1886-1956 (Hardcover) by Frank Slocum was massive in inspiring me to collect vintage stuff. It has great color photographs of so many pre-war cards -- including, I believe, the entire T206 set -- I can't believe you can buy this book used for under $10! http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...qid=1411141825 I just bought another one for my office. Honestly, it should be a required purchase for everyone on Net54.

"Inside Sports" magazine included a cool fold-out poster of vintage cards in one of their issues in 1980. I have it somewhere and will post a photo if I can find it.

Louie, I didn't have a poster that cool when I was a kid, at least, not for baseball cards. Can I borrow yours?
![]() I'm going to have most of the cards on that poster, by the way (I am just announcing to everybody). No Goudey Lajoie , and no T206 Honus Wagner obviously. But the rest I should have a good shot at. I might be wearing diapers and too old to remember/care when it happens, but oh yes, they will be mine!

I didn't have that poster growing up, just the classic Farrah Fawcett one. I guess that could explain a lot .....

Prewar cards were something I only saw in the Sport Americana guides until my dad gave me three N172 Old Judge cards he found in a scrapbook.

great poster---wish I'd had it as a kid.
instead, I had one of those black light posters with a peace sign and dove. I'm glad I had the latter, too. ![]() Paul, I agree with you on the slocum tome. I've had a couple of them for years and keep them in separate ends of the house for easy reading. They're heavy as lead. all the best, barry |

That's a cool poster, Louie. Some sweet cards on there!
The color insert pages from the Sport Americana price guides from the early 80s always grabbed my attention. Several of the cards became ingrained into my memory, specifically the '41 PB DiMaggio, the '53 Mays, the '54 Bowman Williams, and the iconic '52 Topps Mantle... ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by CW; 09-19-2014 at 03:20 PM. |

Nice posters Pete! I feel if I grew up with those on my wall it would have been just as effective as the Burdick collection I had...really cool stuff!
