After seeing Joe's Detroit collection the other day, I figured I'd share a player pose run I completed today. I finished Alex McKinnon, a Pittsburgh player and sadly, the first player from the set to pass away. I may replace the card with character someday, but for now, I'm fine with it since the picture is okay. Too many cards I want to be too picky. I wrote out McKinnon's bio a couple years ago, so you can check that just below. I also included a Pittsburgh player run I completed about ten years ago, Bill Bishop. The only player I have with more poses than McKinnon is Jimmy Ryan. I have all six poses of him, but he isn't a Pirates/Alleghenys player, so no scans!

McKinnon's 315-3 batting pose was the first Old Judge card I ever owned. I chose him as I had read previously about his untimely death during the 1887 season and was fascinated by his card. I have often thought about trying to piece together all 4 poses in each of the two types but have never brought myself to do it (it would be pretty challenging). Alex will always have a special place in my heart (Titus was my 1st T206 and I will always have a soft spot for that card as well).

Cool run John, well done. Neat that you have pose 1 as #0219 (error). So you have two different poses with the same number. Pose 1 can be found as both #0217 (correct) and #0219 (error).
So Rhett, go for it, but don't stop at 8, go for all 9 N172 variations. Add the GQ and you have 10 total possibilities all dating to 1887 (GQ known for pose 2).

It appears that card collecting is an acceptable outlet for "Obsessive- Compulsive " individuals. Always that one more card to get to complete the set etc. After the N172 Old Judge McGreachery sells on REA, the search then will be on for the N173 Cabinet version of this card which is listed on the Goodwin & Co. Cabinet Checklists. What would this cabinet sell for when ( or if) it ever turns up ?

Old Judge : you don't think somebody in the 1880's sent in 25 or so coupons and requested a McGreachery Cabinet ?

Someone probably did, whether or not somebody did and then that card happened to survive until the present day is a whole different story!
Jay, that is interesting... I don't recall ever seeing two of the same pose with the 1887 written captions with different "old Judge" scroll placements. The N172 set is so strange (and by strange I mean awesome!)

He was on the 1888 Indy cabinet checklist so theoretically someone could have ordered the cabinet. However, since they would have had no idea who he was they probably would not have. But--who knows.

It's tough to see on the scan here Rhett, since I needed to get 34 cards in one pic(the last two are photo shopped in)but it helps when you have 36 examples to see at the same time. If you squint, you can see the OJ box in different places on the same card here.

I agree the odds are slim that someone ordered that McGreachery Cabinet. Since it was on the Indy checklist they probably thought they were getting a "McGeachy" cabinet , since he played for the Indy team. As you know, this was corrected on the 1889 checklist and "McGreachery was changed to "McGeachy"

John--the Corcoran GQ is still cheap ($450). That isn't even twice an OJ price. It is also a rare card that needs to be in your collection.

Alright, which one of you owns the card?
![]() I don't collect Larry Corcoran cards, I collect N172 Corcoran cards. If I had a collection worth a grain of salt, I'd have a better proportion of 19th century cards than 355 Old Judge cards and four of everything else. I don't have one GQ card and haven't bought an N173 card in 15 years.

I did bid to watch it, but it wasn't the last bid. I had either the first or second bid. I'm hoping whoever wins it, is buying it instead of an N172 to fill the Corcoran hole in their collection

The original post got a little off subject, which is fine when it's Old Judge talk. Anyway, I completed another run of a Pittsburgh Alleghenys player. Moved up to six poses with this last one. Presenting the Jocko Fields collection, scanned in order according to "the book". The card are actually numbered 0211 to 0216, which is where they got the pose numbers for him.

Well done John!
When I had previously crunched the numbers for Pittsburgh OJs I arrived at 28 different players, 129 different poses. You can arrive at 130 different poses if you count N173 of Fred Carroll (69-4, only catalogued as N173). The list includes four HOFers (Beckley, Galvin, Hanlon, & White) and other notables such as Jim McCormick and Billy Sunday. An interesting team to collect with a nice mix of easy and tough players/poses. How complete are you on different subjects and poses? What is your goal?

John, Dunlap would be an interesting player with eleven poses. He was on the 1887 Detroit squad so I've collected him as well but not as seriously as the Detroit players with Detroit cards. I'm up to seven different poses and realize some of them are pretty tough. Good luck if you go after all of them.
Here is my Pittsburgh list. All the Pittsburgh cards are shaded. The blue shaded cells represent a new card to the OJ set while a gray shaded cell means a re-issue (sometimes a re-issue of a Pittsburgh card, other times a team change to Pittsburgh). Let me know if you have any additions.

I don't know of any not on the list, but I know that there is no 0256 right in the middle of Bill Bishop's run, so people should be on the lookout for that.
