The Clean Sweep auction for the 'complete' set of Leader Novelty cards ended last night.
http://www.csauctions.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000338853 The fact that this group adds 13 cards to the list of known subjects (although my tally is actually 12) is incredible in my opinion...can anyone think of another instance of so large a percentage of previously unknown cards to have surfaced at once? I feel that Clean Sweep didn't promote this fact very well for the consigner. Although this is a very esoteric set with a currently limited collector base, I felt this should have been the headliner for this auction. What do you people think about the closing price of $5000 as well? And does anyone know who the two unnamed cards are in this lot? Seems like this info should have been researched/provided as well. I thought the price was a little low but these very scarce type cards also, many times, have limited demand. I always say that the demand side of the value equation is much more important than the supply side. This lot continued to prove it. Had the little Leader box, in the lot, been one that we know held a card it might have done better too.

Not a comment on the set or price as I am not familiar with them but...
I believe their site is far far from aesthetically pleasing... It seems like this is the most clustered disorganized description set up on any online auction house I've seen. The whole deal where they center the entire page makes my head spin... Edited for grammar and to add my name since it is something negative... I find it interesting that these cards were in one of the highest-profile sales of all time, and yet a dozen cards in the lot were considered "unknown." I wonder what else could be found by diligent searching through old catalogs.
If anyone has a Copeland catalog lying around, perhaps they could check to see whether the other two cards are identified there. Bill |

Pulled out my Copeland Catalog and here is the description:
Leader Novelty Candy Co., circa 1929, 33 different cards plus the flattened out candy box they were inserted in, full body action poses, same photos and format as R316 only smaller, tinted either red, brown, purple or green, unnumbered, blank backs, the lot includes 16 Hall of Famers including Foxx, Frisch, Klein, Hornsby, Ott, Simmons, Traynor and Waner, excellent to mint. 13/4in. by 2 5/8in. (34) This may well be the largest grouping of these in exsitence. No documentation exists regarding a checklist or background for this set, which was previously uncataloued. $4,000-6,000 Last edited by Vintagecatcher; 01-31-2013 at 09:24 AM. |

But I know it's just a matter of personal taste. Edited to add: I also like their auction-ending system okay. I put my bids in the day the auction ends, then simply check back a few minutes before the 5% bid premium is added, and put in additional bids as needed. The '30 minute per lot' rule is more 'fun', but ultimately I'm trying to win stuff.

Thanks, Patrick. They only listed half the HoFers? Wow.
Clean Sweep guys, I imagine you're kind of busy the day after your auction, but could someone fill us in on who the other two players are? Thanks, Bill PS, if the winner is on here and is thinking about breaking up the group, I'd like to hear about the Judge. |

Figure I will bump this thread. It seems the winner of the CleanSweep lot of Leader Novelty cards ended up selling them individually on ebay. They also sold the box which I was the under bidder on. My good friend Dan Mc.Kee out-sniped me on it. That being said I was glad to recently pick up a mint box for half the price of the ebay one. Thanks Toby!!
