I wanted to get some opinions on this card. I realize the scans suck. I am not super familiar with issue and don't know any tells for the fakes.

There might be something I am missing but the common issues aren't there.....usually I can spot a fake right away by the poor picture quality. Then I look for cropping and it's fine.....the aging looks legit..The picture is universally fuzzy but I am leaning towards it being good.....maybe someone will know where the word "reprint" was erased?
Of course if it is as fuzzy in person as it is in that picture, then it won't be good, but I think it's just the poor quality of the whole picture that makes it look that way.

make a guess either way due to the the poor picture quality. I see some things that look fake to me but it could be just the very poor picture quality. It has that grainy repro look but gain it could just be the pic. Would be much easier to tell with card in hand.

It's usually easy to tell with a big clear photo. The Goudey Ruths are commonly counterfeited, including on home computers, and anyone can take a big clear photo if he wanted, so I'm not going to offer an opinion on a grainy photo. I'm working on the assumption that this is a photo a seller provided you. I wouldn't buy it if those are the photos a seller gave me.
If any online raw card sale requires a big clear photo, it's a 1933 Goudey Ruth. Last edited by drcy; 05-29-2014 at 09:05 AM. |

Can you be more specific as to what is wrong. I will either be able to see this in person or get better photos before I buy it. I need to know all the tells all you guys think are saying it's bad seems it's pretty split right now.

Get a high quality scan for a definitive answer. If he won't send you anything but these photos then just pass. I see good and bad, but with the current quality photo no one could render 100%... With that said I am still leaning towards good.

+1
Edges and corners would be the giveaway if it's a forgery made from images of a real card. But it could be real - get scans.

Edges look burnt/crispy which is common with fakes.

Along with the other questions that have been posted, I am curious of the asking price. Is it too good to be true? Also, do you know the seller and their reputation, do they offer refunds? Where did you find the card for sale or did the seller reach out to you? Lastly, are you familiar with the issue ( 1933 Goudey )? It is always better to see the card in person if at all possible.

Do you guys think that the bleed through on the bad would carry over on a copy? It seems that would be pretty light and a scan or copy would not pick it up.
If fake it seems it is more likely a home made card. Are there reprints that are not marked and where are they marked. It doesn't seem to have a scrap spot that would indicate that a word was scraped off. I realize the edges look bad but the back looks really good with the red bleed through and the stain. James G
