I was wondering how many different cities or teams from the n172 Old Judge set were photographed by Gray studios of Boston.
Dan posted a Connie Mack in the October p/u thread. The background is the same as this Moose Farrell that I got from B-L a month ago... ![]() I have seen Washington, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh recently..(Ferguson in Saco River, and Fields in RMY, plus a possible Clements on ebay earlier this year.) Post some more Gray studio cabinets if you have them or any additional information is appreciated.... |

Here is my recent pick up...the lower left corner is actually separated from the card, I just placed it back in there for the scan...any advice on what to do about that is appreciated. I'd also like to know if any other Gray Studio Mack's are known to exist.

According to the back of my card Wm Pollock was a cousin of Connie Mack. I found this on the internet:
------------------------------------------- Pollock and Mack Special Dispatch to the World Herald Beatrice, Nebraska, September 18. -- At the parsonage last night occurred the marriage of Miss Edna Mack to William Pollock, the Rev. U. G. Brown officiating. Morning World Herald: Omaha, Saturday, September 19, 1908 --------------------------------------------- I wonder if there is a relationship between Edna and Connie Mack?? btw I found this cabinet photo in Beatrice, Nebraska and the dealer told me that it came from a local nineteenth century photographer's collection that had been kept together all these years.

Rob--Gray did the 1887 Old Judge photo shoot for all NL teams, except New York. New York was photographed by Carroll Studios. That would mean Gray did Boston, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago and Washington.

Now that is a nice Studio Proof Dan, please tell us more about how you obtained it. With all the teams that were photographed by Gray in 1887, there could be some real nice HOFers including some of my Detroit boys (Brouthers, Hanlon, & Thompson). I do hope more surface with time.

Jay, Thanks for the information on the Gray studio teams.
Dan, It's amazing that you found that at a local shop. Great discovery. I would just leave the card in the condition it's in, kept together in a sleeve. There are paper conservators who could re-attach the corner, if you wanted that done. I think a lot of these types of baseball cabinets were saved as family portraits by family members. I have images of 39 different Gray cabinets from a number of different teams. Some players have 5-6 different poses
