Good trades / Bad trades

Have you ever made a trade that seemed even for both parties and as time passed one of you obviously got the better/worse deal?

In 1998 at the heat of the McGwire/Sosa HR race I traded 10 1996 Donruss Mark McGwire and 10 1996 Donruss Sammy Sosa cards for this 1995 Action Packed Derek Jeter autograph #1A. I'm a huge Yanks fan and thought Jeter was going to be a superstar. Turns out, I was right.

Here's one for the books. In the late 80's I traded a strong vg/ex 33 goudey Ruth for a 54 Topps Kaline ex. Duh!! What was I thinkin!!!

I traded a 1992 Topps set with a Brien Taylor autograph in it for a bunch of nice looking '75 mini's. At the time the $$ were about even as Taylor was anticipated to be the next Doc Gooden and they "encapsulated" a limited number of autographed cards in the base set. Something like 12,000 auto's. In 1993 Taylor declined to play Winter ball and tore his labrum throwing a haymaker as he defended his brother in a brawl. He was never the same. Brien Taylor became the 2nd player that was the 1st overall pick never to reach the majors, behind Steve Chilcott in 1966.

At around age 13, I traded 3 or 4 Nintendo games for like (15) 1987 Topps Jose Canseco All Star Rookie cards.

I think both of us came out equally bad in that deal.

In '86 when he was hotter than the sun, I "traded" a $100 bill for Conseco's Donruss rc in PSA 8. SMR now lists his PSA 8 for $6. Ouch!

Being a big Yanks fan I had a 1992 Topps Gold Brien Taylor and held onto that thing like it was the cornerstone of my collection. I think I still have it stowed away somewhere. I have a bad feeling that Pineda is going to be the next Taylor when it comes to young pitchers. But maybe that's just me being a pessimistic Yankees fan and preparing for the sucky years ahead.

In about 1981 I traded a 74 McCovey Washington for a few of these.



Some numbered over 150, some reversed photos, all odd colors etc. I got maybe 20 of them.

Immediately swapped half to a dealer for another McCovey Washington.

I've never seen any other 76 Hostess done in yellow/green.

I made a stupid deal back about 1990 - Traded 6 to 10 1955 All American Football (including Grange, Hutson, 4 Horsemen, forget the rest) for about 10 Cory Snyder and Todd Worrell 86 rookie cards (86 Donruss as I recall)

There might have been an Eric Davis RC or 2 thrown in also....

But, hey, according to Beckett at the time, I ripped him off

I was part of a trade of a Donruss Mattingly rookie ( a crazy hot card in the day) for a 1952 T Mantle..slightly trimmed and glued on the bottom of an ashtray..

I remember those days when Mattingly was on fire late 1986 that was the time
in which modern cards started to go crazy, after vintage cards hit rock bottom,
in the early 80s the main card guide was CPU and for about 3 years straight
vintage cards kept going down! and the 52 T Mantle went down from $6000
high book to $800/$1500 and you could pick up the ones in poor condition
cheap, in 1984/85 because of that i went through more 52 Mantles in those couple of years
than the rest of my life combined, if i only knew what was in the future oh well!

I hope you got the ash tray! In all of my years searching, I've never found a 52 topps Mantle ashtray. There is something fun about cards glued to weird items.

Yes that was a wild time in the sportscard hobby... that monthly price guide CPU..and the other one CCP... we would flock to the card stores to get the latest months copy of that rag ! searching for " up arrows" .. I remember the 75T set was always on the move... and yes...the early 50s stuff just kept tumbling down ,.... Oh those Bump Wills variations.....you had to have both !..because every month the other one would " make a move" !

No..we could not separate the card from the bottom of the ceramic ashtray.. I recall we had no type of proper cutting tool... so a hammer was used to break the walls of the ashtray..then trying to peel the card from this glob of glass was a mess..every corner of the card ..in an attempt to peel it.. got dog eared / paper separation /but the front of the card was glued so strongly it never came off the glass

You mean that you graded it much later and it came back an 8 from PSA, right?

Not a trade, but the pain is the same. I grew up in NW Ohio, where 1975 Mini's were readily available. Being only 8, I thought they were just inferior, expendable versions of the regular set, and wound up letting a couple large shopping bags full of them go at a family garage sale.

Can't remember the specifics, and more than likely it never got past the hypothetical stage. We were both 11 or 12, and we all know how little kids just like to talk, just for the sake of talking.. And even if we had, more than likely our parents would've nixed it.. But I remember having talked about trading a bunch of 80's and 90's star cards and a coupla games, for one of the standard gray "nintendo world championship" cartridges.

I'd say he definitely made out by not making the trade.. Haven't talked to him in forever, so I don't know what ultimately happened to the game..

Given that only 116 were made in total(90 grey and 26 gold), I still feel kinda priviledged to have at least gotten to play it, no matter how crappy it actually was..

it was 1987 when my fellow 3rd grade classmate brought a stack of his fathers 1956 Topps to school for trade... I had just ripped open a bunch of 1987 topps packs the night before had had a stack of fresh woodgrain beauties available...

the trade went a little something like this:
Dave's 1987 Topps Canseco, Wally Joyner, Roger Clemens (record breaker and regular), Wade Boggs, and I believe Will Clark

For the following:
-Hank Aaronn, Jackie Robinson, and a Redsox team card.

At the time I think the aaron booked at $30 & the Robby $25... When I showed my mother the value of my new Gems, she got so ticked off that she called my classmates father and offered the cards back... Noah's father refused by saying that his son had to learn a lesson, and that he had given him only his doubles anyway!!!!!
