Bill Rumler's Zeenut cards

I was wondering if anyone on here would be able to share a good scan of Bill Rumler's Zeenut cards from 1929 and 1930 sets. He played for Hollywood in those years after being allowed back into organized ball after being implicated in the PCL scandal of 1919 (bad year for baseball!). After serving out a long suspension he came roaring back and had 2 monster years with The Shieks batting .386 in '29 and .353 in '30 before sustaining a career ending injury. Rumler always swore he did nothing wrong and it would seem that his being let back at the age of 38 would prove that right.

I want to do an illustration of Rumler but I only found a blurry Zeenut to work from, any help would be much appreciated.

(as a side not I am also looking in vain for a copy of the Sports Collectors Digest article on Rumler in the 9/17/1993 edition)

Here is his toughest Zeenut, the 1920. Unfortunately I haven't collected either of the years you are looking for all that much so I can't help you on the 1929 & 1930.

Impressive, guys. That is what this board does best. ZeeNuts, Collins McCarthy, the autographed 3x5... that only the Weil Baking remains. I looked through a box of ZeeNuts early on, but couldn't help.

Rumler was quite a character...his last team he played for was Lincoln in 1932 in the Nebraska State League...he was suspended for punching an umpire and his career was over.

All we need now are some vintage newspaper links. I wasn't really familiar with this fellow's reputation--just his autograph (which certainly isn't an easy acquisition).

I apologize if I hijack this thread as I don't mean to, but I didn't know about the PCL scandal of 1920...

Could someone explain that to me and what players were involved?

Here's a brief run-down from memory:

The Vernon (small community just outside the LA city limits) Tigers were the powerhouse of the PCL, winning the pennant in 17-18-19. Like the White Sox scandal, gamblers were behind the scenes pulling the strings and they used Vernon's first baseman Babe Borton to approach and bribe players from the Salt Lake City Bees to go easy on the Tigers so they could clinch the pennant. Bees players Jean Dale (pitcher), Harl Maggert (outfielder) and Bill Rumler (outfielder) were the players implicated as taking the dirty money. Apparently Borton was pretty sloppy about the bribes and the whole thing was quickly uncovered. Borton, Maggert and Dale were thrown out of organized ball for ever and Rumler, who totally denied everything, was suspended for 8 years.

That's off the top of my head, there may have been more players thrown out but I'm not sure. The whole thing gave West Coast ball a bad name especially when the Black Sox scandal broke and it was discovered that half of the dirty Sox had West Coast connections - McMullin, Gandill, Risberg and Williams.

FYI: When I was looking at the cards I looked closely at Smith's 1920 Zeenut card and thought to myself "That guy has to be Native American" and after a little research it is confirmed that Luther "Casey" Smith was in fact Native American. So, thanks to this thread I learned something totally new about the cards I own. Great thread.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread, plus the ones who sent private emails as well. The Zeenut cards and a few unpublished photos lent to me by a collector helped me get a good look at what Rumler looked like.

Here is my drawing of "Ole Bill" Rumler of the Hollywood Sheiks taking his position in the outfield at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, 1929. This drawing will accompany a story that will be in an upcoming issue of "21: The Illustrated Journal of Outsider Baseball" that will focus on Southern California ballplayers and lore.

For those who would like more information on Bill Rumler, Sports Collectors Digest did a great article on him a few years ago. The issue is Sept 12, 1983, Vol. 20, No.38, 67th issue. I'm his grand niece and provided much of the information contained in the article. As an aside, Bill went onto coach a Lincoln NE minor league team, then onto Milford NE to be police and fire chief.

I still remember my visit to Lincoln and Milford where you so generously shared some photos, family lore, etc. Hard to believe it was 20 years ago.

It is too bad those old issues of Sports Collectors Digest have never been scanned so that articles would remain accessible.

I'm confused about the SCD dates mentioned above. I have all 3 original issues from Sept 1983 right in my hand & the dates & volume #'s don't coincide.

My 3 copies are as follows:

Sept 2, 1983 Volume 10 #18
Sept 16, 1983 Volume 10 #19
Sept 30, 1983 Volume 10 #20

Can anyone explain?

That's my point (above)--There is NO Sept 12, 1983 issue. I think she must have the YEAR wrong.

I have his original major league card. I also have a wealth of information about him, including later photos when he was police and fire chief in Milford. I also have the Sports Collectors Digest edition, with quite a few great pictures of him, during his entire baseball career. Could scan and post, if anyone is interested.

I just heard from Maleesh. She acknowledges an error in the year---1993 is the correct yr of her publication, not 1983!
