Has anyone seen "Dimished Capacity" ? It stars Alan Alda as an old man with a very rare Wildfire Schulte card (looks like a T206 size-wise) and Matthew Broderick plays his nephew, who is driving him to a card show to sell it ?
I saw it a while back and the discussion about baseball movies made me wonder if others were aware of it. Have a great day ! |

There was an episode of Deep Space Nine, written by my late friend and fellow collector Michael Piller, entitled "In the Cards."
Synopsis: The mood aboard Deep Space 9 has grown dark as the Dominion threat has intensified. Three ships have disappeared along the Cardassian border in just the last three weeks, Odo has canceled a vacation due to increased thefts of food rations and medical supplies, and the crew is generally gloomy – Captain Sisko most of all. What's more, Kai Winn Adami announces she'll be visiting the station. Fortunately, Jake Sisko has a plan to lift his father's spirits – Quark has invited him to an auction at which a mint-condition Willie Mays rookie year baseball card will be available. He'll show up, purchase the card, and make a gift of it. "How hard can that be?" |

"Needful Things" by Stephen King...the first customer purchased a 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle.
Interestingly enough, in the book, the card was Sandy Koufax.

I just watched the movie, due to the recommendation earlier on Amazon.com's instant download for $2.99. I thought it was okay. The scenes at the card show were somewhat realistic, but all in all it wasn't that great of a movie. Alan Alda's character was pretty good, but Broderick's performance was so-so. It's worth the 3 bucks I guess, but don't get your hopes up for Oscar winning performances.

Wikipedia: "The Winning Season is a 2004 made-for-TV film with elements of a fantasy drama. It chronicles a young boy's dream in 1985 with playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates great Honus Wagner. The film follows the dream to the point where the boy is assisting Wagner in his 1909 World Series duel with fellow hall-of-famer Ty Cobb."

I concur Diminished Capacity was ok...worth watching...the way they handle baseball cards in these always drives me up the wall. My mother-in-law who had dementia, lived with us for several years until her death, so it was interesting to me from that perspective.

How about "Goonies" when a young Sean Astin stumbled across the remains of 'Chester Copperpot' who had been crushed decades earlier while searching for 'One-Eyed Willy's' gold fortune. Upon thumbing through Copperpot's journal, he stumbled across a '33 or '34 Goudey Lou Gehrig.

They actually find the 1973 Gehrig Topps in Mr. Copperpott's possesions though he was supposed to be down there in the time frame better suited for the Goudey. Im not sure why they didn't just spring for a repro instead of a cheaper almost modern at the time card. Heck a total beater would have even been relatively cheap by hollywood standards in the early/mid 80's when Goonies was made.

Let's go way back to the late 50's. Jim Newton hires a drifter to help out on the ranch. Nephew, Joey and his buddy Packy recognize him from a baseball card. (I remember that it resembled a 1958 Topps.) The drifter has dropped out of society due to remorse after killing a batter with a wild pitch. The boys can't say anything about baseball because they are afraid the former pitcher will have an emotional upheaval. Unfortunately, the first thing that Packy excitedly says to him is, "Can you teach us to throw a curve ball?" Doh!
"Why would you ask me that?" "Uh, um, um, because all adults know how to throw a curve ball." That's all I can remember. How come I can remember crap like that and forget to pick up bread and milk on the way home? |

It is probably Season 5, Episode 2. It was called, The Big Leaguer. Originally aired October 17, 1959.
I'm going to assume the part of the big leaguer was played by Charles Aidman. The other regular characters and actors were: Jim Newton (Peter Graves) Joey Newton (Bobby Diamond) Packy Lambert (Roger Mobley) Pete (William Fawcett) Last edited by Jerry G; 12-19-2012 at 10:09 PM. |

To add....I just saw "Memphis Belle" last night. In one scene a guy is talking about trading his DiMaggio card. Then when they're on their final flight, when they showed the planes navigator at his maps, he had a 1940 PlayBall card on top. I collect this set but the view was so quick, and unexpected, I couldn't tell who the player was. It was a players head/face card so I know it was not the DiMaggio card.

The Natural- it has the uncut sheets of wanna be '41 Play Ball type cards
Mask- Rocky Dennis rips his buddy's '55 Topps card... I think it's Rube Walker but might be wrong.. Check that, I think he rips a '74 Topps Dodger (Cey?).. But think they have a '55 Rube Walker Major League- Pedro Cerrano has a '54 Topps Aaron hanging in his locker Boardwalk Empire- Jimmy's son has a stack of T206's including a Cobb bat on (assuming reprints) I'll add more if they occur to me... I'm not sure this is the OP's intention but I like where this is going. ADDING- Jacob's Ladder- sort of a downer here... little McAauly Culkin while crossing the drops a stack of '74 Topps cards and gets run over by a car while picking them up Stand By Me- Gordie Le Chance's big bro (John Cusack) has some Topps cards hanging from his wall.. I think maybe a '60 Mantle? Which I think I remember bugging me because the movie is supposed to be in the late '50's. I may be making that memory up though.. Haven't seen the movie in year Big- flipping through a wax pack ('86 or '87 based on shooting dates) saying, "got em, got em, need him, got em" Last edited by itjclarke; 07-31-2013 at 09:43 PM. Data is captured by Kivas Fajo, an alien trader who also has amassed a large collection of unique and one-of-a-kind artifacts from around the galaxy. One of the prized possessions he shows Data is a 1962 Topps Roger Maris card sealed in an airtight container because it still retains its bubble-gum smell. |

There was an episode of "Who's the Boss?" where Angela pays a hundred bucks for Tony's rookie card, which I believe was an '81 Donruss.
At the end of the film "Comic Book Villians," a closet full of baseball cards is revealed, but I don't think any individual card can be seen.

Well, if Hollywood ever wants to do a proper movie about baseball cards, they could cast Nicolas Cage as John Titus.
