A minor league game in Class A had a walk off hit negated because the runner on first did not go to second and the center fielder and shortstop knew the rules...no run can be recorded on an inning ending force play. Video link below.

That's a great video. It's amazing that kids aren't taught that rule when they first learn the game. Or maybe my viewpoint is skewed by my childhood. I was raised in Chicago in the 60's, where the "Merkle" play was still being discussed from time to time.
I wonder how often Merkle is mentioned to young players. From this I guess the answer is not often enough. ![]() |

I had ESPN's "Around the Horn" on yesterday and after the clip was shown, one of the panelists referenced Merkle's Boner. I was shocked to hear the reference to Fred Merkle on such a show, then even more shocked when "Snodgrass' Muff" was mentioned.
