With their fifth-round draft choice (#160 overall) a few minutes ago, the Rangers selected All-American catcher Joe Jackson of The Citadel (he grew up in South Carolina). He is the great-great-great nephew of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.
He supposedly has a championship ring/pendant of ole Joe's that was turned into a watch (or the other way around) years ago and has been passed down from generation to generation. Kinda cool. Last edited by BradH; 06-07-2013 at 03:56 PM. |

Hi! I work for the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum here in Greenville, SC. We're all very proud of Joseph today! Here are a couple of photos!
1. The 1917 pendant 2. The ring Shoeless Joe had made from it. Joseph wore the ring when he signed to play ball with the Citadel. His father owns the ring. ![]() [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Thanks for all the replies! I am glad you enjoyed the photos! I have had the ring on my finger! Crazy!
![]() The Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum is here in Greenville, SC. The museum is actually his home where he lived and died. It was moved 3 miles from its original location to be directly across the street from our minor league team, the Greenville Drive (Red Sox affiliate). They wanted to name the team the 'Greenville Joe's' but MLB said, "No", since Joe is still on the ineligible list. We're trying to change that at the museum! We consider the museum "Ground Zero" for that mission! So much to his story that people don't know! He played outlaw ball after being kicked out of pro ball and made much more money that way! Comiskey was a tight wad. In fact, the name the 'Black Sox' came from the team's refusal to pay .25 per game to launder their uniforms. They refused, so their white uniforms were black by the end of the season - hence the name! ![]() Any Joe ?'s you may have, you are free to ask! ![]() |

Those pictures are incredible. Thank you for sharing them.
My fascination with Shoeless Joe Jackson has increased exponentially within the last few years. I'd love to visit his museum. Why does it not surprise me that MLB said no to the name change. They're officially the no fun league.

GiGi is a wonderful lady who does a fantastic job at the museum. My wife and I visited her place back in February. That was my first visit to the museum and had a fantastic time. She does an exceptional job of telling the story of Joe Jackson. She saw that I was wearing a Coast Guard jacket and we struck up a conversation about her father serving in the Air Force.
I would highly recommend visiting if you are ever in or near Greenville. I will post pictures of our visit once I download them. r/ Frank

As far as I am concerned any stain on the Joe Jackson name has been polished off a long time ago! Awesome pieces GiGi,thanks for sharing! Figures MLB wouldn`t allow the name change, should have told them the team was being named after Bazooka Joe. I wish a long and succesful major league career for this "new" Joe Jackson.

Welcome to the board, GiGi, and if I'm ever down in SC I'll be sure to stop in. Shoeless Joe might be the biggest "what if" in baseball -- who knows what amazing stats and accomplishments he would've achieved had his MLB career not been cut short?
By the way, you might be interested in this thread from awhile back in which a collector pointed out a sliding Joe Jackson on the center panel in the T202 set. There's some good detective work in the thread, and the board helps in the discovery of a "new" Shoeless Joe baseball card within the hobby. Last edited by CW; 06-08-2013 at 10:16 PM. |
