Thanks to a collective effort from many in the hobby as well as the continuous efforts of Lyman Hardeman in keeping everything up-to-date, the Baseball Hall of Fame Rookie Card database found on the OldCardboard website now includes scans of over 90% of all cards listed (see below link):
http://www.oldcardboard.com/ref/rookies/RookiesList.asp At this point, it has become extremely difficult to fill in the remaining gaps so we would like to take this opportunity to ask for assistance from our fellow collectors who might have a scan or scans that we are still missing in the database. If you have something and would be willing to share it with us, please forward your scan(s) via e-mail to vguerrerobb@yahoo.com and/or editor@oldcardboard.com and we will update the database accordingly. As always, your input is greatly appreciated and we look forward to working towards 100% completion of this project one day. -Phil Garry |

Thanks for the quick response, guys. Unfortunately, we do not have a way to sort through the database and extract only the cards that we are missing scans of. Therefore, I will start to work on that process manually tonight and will work as quickly as possible to compile a list of the scans that we are still missing and I will post it in this thread once complete.

Hi Phil,
Just a note on the Coupon Wheat card pictured....it's not a type 1 (1910) issue, it appears to be type 2 (1914). Type 1's were issued with brown captions, you could use a T206, no one would notice.... |

Brian, I too believe the Bucky Harris card in the E122 checklist is a mistake. The SCD has him listed as Sam Harris, which he is listed as in the E220 set. They both have the "box" thing at the bottom of the card (but are completely different types of "boxes") so I am thinking the E220 mistakenly got listed as a E122 card as well. Also, I have serious doubts about the Perry Lipe card also listed in the E122 checklist.
These cards (E122) were simply E121 cards with a frame added around them and rephotographed--in a way similar to the way Jay et al describe the Old Judge (N172) cards production. Thus I have a hard time believing they created new cards for Perry Lipe and Bucky Harris that weren't produced in the E121 Series of 80 (like evry other card in the set). -Rhett

Lyman--I'm a bit confused. i thought a "rookie" card had to be a major league card. Clark Griffith's Old Judge card pictures him on Milwaukee of the Western Association, a minor league. Honus Wagner's card should, I believe, be the Sporting News insert, not the Nat'l Copper Plate, which I believe was issued after the Sporting News. Also, Kid Nichols is only pictured in the Old Judge set as a member of the minor league Omaha Omahogs.
Phil--Why are you asking for non-rookie images? (Beckley, Duffy, McCarthy, Rusie, Thompson) |

Jay:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding our project. Probably the toughest decision that Lyman and I had to make on this database was whether to include minor league cards. My original listings did not include them but after discussing further with Lyman, we felt it best to include them in the database and leave it up to the individual collector as to whether or not they want to include them in their collection. The prime example that we looked at was the 1914 Baltimore News Ruth. How would we not mention this iconic card in a rookie card database although it is a minor league issue and many collectors prefer to stick to major league cards? The reason for the scans of non-rookie cards is that we decided to publish a "Top 5" rather than select one single card for each Hall of Famer as this might give a budget conscious collector the next best option if a top rookie card or even a second or third choice is not obtainable for them due to cost constraints. Hopefully, this clarifies why we made the choices that we did but ultimately the collector has the final say in her or her collection. |

![]() Quote:
So our approach, generally, was to select the earliest five cards to represent each HOFer and let each collector decide whether to include pre-rookie cards, supplements, postcards, exhibits, stamps, etc. that others may not want to consider for their collections. Also, at least for many HOFers, there are multiple "rookie cards" (by your definition) so we wanted to show all "options." In other words, "we report; you decide." With possibly one or two exceptions, we have ordered the earliest five cards for each HOFer in chronological order. Hope this helps. We are always open to suggestions and feedback from all collectors and we sincerely appreciate the tremendous support that we have received for this and other projects. Lyman |

Lyman, Phil, I would appreciate if you could clarify some card dates. Your rookie card site for O'Rourke has the following two dates: 1886 Joseph Hall Cabinet 1886 Kalamazoo Bats The SCBC has the Joseph Hall Cabinets issued in 1888...which date is correct? Also, your website list of N-cards has Kalamazoo Bats issued in 1887, which is also the date in the SCBC book. Were K-Bats cards also issued in 1886 or is 1887 the correct date? If the Joseph Hall Cabinets were issued in 1888, then maybe the 5th earliest card could be the 1887 N172 Old Judge or the 1887 N284 Buchner? If you would like scans of either card just let me know. Paul C.:
Upon further research, the Joseph Hall Cabinet that you mentioned can be definitively attributed to an issue date of 1888-89 so therefore we are adjusting our database accordingly. Although the most commonly catalogued date of issue for the individual player - Kalamazoo Bats cards is 1887, based on extensive research of in-season traders/team changes that took place during the 1886 season, it appears that the 1886 date is in fact the accurate one, assuming that this set was not produced over two or more seasons (highly unlikely). |

That's an awesome cabinet card picturing Beckley which I never knew existed, thanks for sharing it! Since it is a team composite cabinet, we are going to hold off on including it in our database as we have made a conscious decision not to include team cards, ie T200's, W601 Postcards, etc. We feel that the general concensus among Rookie Card collectors is that Rookie Cards are individual player (and occasionally dual or quadruple) cards. |

Hey Phil,
Here's a couple of PCs you may not know about. The Smokey Joe Williams is a PC made of a 1985 painting by Deryl Daniel Mackie, in conjunction with a traveling art exhibition called "Diamonds Are Forever: Artists and Writers on Baseball," which took place in 1987 (hence the date that I assigned it on my label). The postcard was published by The Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. The 2nd PC is an autographed government issue of George Weiss, supposedly made during the 1950s, though I'm not really certain of the date. I've included a scan of the back of this one. Hope these help. |

Thanks for posting the F-Robby scan, I did see that one on e-bay but was not involved in the bidding. Looks like someone got a pretty nice bargain, especially if the auto is legit. I have not been able to come up with any catalogued 1956 Cincinnati Team Issue photo set so we have not included that one in the database yet. The seller told me it was a one-year uniform style, used only in 1956. I believe it is the same photo as his 57 Topps card. I have the 1957 team issue, and it is a very different picture (a portrait, shown in the standard catalog), so the ebay one is not from 57. I suppose it could be from 58 or later, though 56 sounds like the most likely candidate so far.
