Please wish Mr. Overall the best and keep him in your prayers as he will be going into sergury tonight!
He will be out in the morning before you head to work so please check back. The sergury may be complicated as he has something attached to his back. He has been carrying this as extra weight for all of these years. In consulting with other physicians, we feel that the best decision is to remove the additional weight. We all are confident that he will appreciate the improvement even though he will not be able to speak. Please keep in mind that no other physicians will be allowed in the operating room as I do not want to be embarassed; as this will be my first sergury. See you all in the morning....Craig Last edited by Craig M; 04-02-2013 at 07:08 PM. |

A before and after front comparison. The front cleaned up rather nicely even though I noticed some paper degradation on bottom lower right.

Looks like it resulted in ink or paper loss on the front. Am I wrong?

Hey Craig, nice job removing the paper off of the back !!
Question- was there any type of transfer visible from the back of that card on the paper you soaked off? Fron the last picture, it doesn't look like there is, but you can only see the bottom. Thanks- Sincerely, Clayton |

Those dots are very interesting indeed. I don't recall ever noticing that before.

From the looks of the rest of the card...those 2 dots appear to be stains of some sort?!?! Seeing as the card is trimmed and has paper loss...a long soak can only improve the appearance.
Nice documentation...and nice work! |

Clayton: no transfer is noticed on the removed paper.
I also can't claim to be a doc but maybe I missed my true calling. No trimming by myself was done. This card was how I purchased it. It appears to but cut right off of the wall with an exacto knife of some type. (It appears my scanner auto cropped it too closely making the card appear with sharp edges at lower bottom left edge). Those two dots (colon) puzzle me. They appear to be uniform and not splatters; they also remained as all of the other junk on the card cleaned up. Any ideas? Do you have a large enough scan that you can zoom in to see if it was printed?

Good job on the operation Craig.
The colour and uniformity of the dots does give it a printed look. It appears that they faded a bit after the operation, my guess is they are a really dark stain that just happens to be in the right place ![]() Would like to see a really high resolution scan or loop it.

When I get home this evening I will adjust my scanner to zoom in on those two dots. They appear to be just a shade darker than the word CUBS which leads me to believe Peter.
There was paper loss on the front but I will also have to look closer to see if there was ink loss. Is it best to use distilled water instead of tap water? Possibly the minerals in tap water is too harsh for a 100+ year card. Craig |

100 yr-old beaters that require soaking to get them to even acceptable status? tap water. Been doing it for years and the cards look fine when finished.
There are definitely times when distilled water has its place, but there is no need to go out and buy it for soaking poor grade cards.

I scan at 2400, but that is because I can and I enjoy looking at the dot pattern when possible. 600 should be good enough to see what is needed, but the larger the more info can be gathered.

Not sure about the two dots. Perhaps from markers or a pen? Looking forward to seeing a larger scan. I think you might have a right side printer's mark on the front as well, but it could be part of a stain. Overall, nice job on removing the wallpaper; looks better already.

I suppose that I could start marketing my pristine Wisconsin well water, which works fine, in environmentally approved plastic containers with an image of Honus Wagner affixed to owners of dirty cardboard. I have no doubt that it would soon become the industry standard. My wife could (wo)man the switchboard. Obviously we wouldn't be able to ship more than 16 oz to residents of New York, but we would be able to offer volume discounts to others, as the product is also a fine thirst quencher. Net54 board members will be given preferential treatment when we go public with the IPO. Finally a retirement job that makes sense, if not cents.

I'm kind of amazed at all the intricacies of technique described whenever a thread like this is started. It's really very, very simple:
It really is as simple as I have described - I've done it countless times.

Hi Jim-
Looks like a little paper loss but I don't see ink loss. But, my eyes aren't the best and I could be wrong on the ink. I'm just glad to see there was no WST on the back of the removed paper. I wonder how long the card had the paper attached to it? I think the two dots look to be the same brown ink as the CUBS lettering. A high res scan would be awesome. Sincerely, Clayton |

The dots are not the same color. The color blocks at the bottom of the picture I have attached are the average color of the pixels inside each space. The numbers inside those boxes are the RGB colors. I also cropped out a circle and overlaid it on the left side of the "S".

I have two screens at work. The screen that I use for the web (also is the screen that holds my tools for my art programs) is older and thus doesn't hold its color correction very long doesn't show the difference in color very well. It wasn't until I pulled the card into photoshop on my other screen was it so blatant that it was a different color. That is why I also put the RGB values on there so that you could see the data without the fooling of the eyes.

I have an inexpensive scanner and it doesn't allow me to go any further than I already have (600 dpi).
I have tried to get my local FedEx Kinkos to take a scan of it and they said that because of copyright laws, they can't do it. I respect their decision and for the time being I guess the : (colon) will have to wait until I get a new scanner that will go to 1200dpi. Craig |
