I just purchased a George Brown T206 in PSA 5 (The Washington variation) and was wondering why is his card worth so much more that most of the T206 of course excluding players like Mathewson, Cobb, Walter Johnson and so on? Are they rarer. I read his story a bit but can't seem to justify such a price difference...maybe I missed something. I like the card and will keep it for sure as part of my T206 set (lollll I own only 2 so far).

In Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards vol 3 tobacco cards lew has a paragraph which includes the George Brown card.
"Previously, in the "Series" section, it was suggested that there are other T206's that are more difficult even though they aren't recognized as such. There are ten such poses that have characteristics of only being in the 150 series." 55 G. Brown (Chicago) is one of those cards. I just noticed the card on EBAY was "Washington", so not sure if this is the one. T206 experts will chime in. Joe

Yes,
Mr. Brown has 2 cards in the set, Chicago and Washington. The Washington variation is the most expensive his 2 cards. ![]() BTW nice start Last edited by lharri3600; 03-27-2013 at 10:44 AM. |

George Brown was one of three subjects (also Dahlen and Elberfeld) who's team designation was changed during the production of Group 1 subjects. As collectors we classify each team designation for these three as a different subject. If you follow the complete printing progression for both team designations of any of the three, you will see they are the same as other common Group 1 subjects.
When we separate each of the three into two different team variations, it reduces the number of backs possible for each, creating scarcity in comparison to other Group 1 subjects. |

That card was a good pick up. His Chicago card for the record is also a very tough card, especially in high grade....

He had a Washington card. Then was traded mid-season to Chicago I believe (?). So they stopped making the Washington card, and started making the Chicago card. So the Washington card is a little rarer since production was ceased. There are a couple other people in the set like this (Dahlen, Lundgren, Kleinow, Elberfeld, etc.). I hope this helps!

I am just trying to get some of the harder more expensive cards out of the way first then go after the more common cards later on.
