If you show the picture, it will be easier to give an opinion. I know which one you won, but I'll let you post the image if you choose.

I too have something along the lines of this that I would like to get restored. Anyone have a name for someone that does this? A good one, that is..
I also have a bb card that was in a scrapbook and has tape on the corners. Does anyone know of pro that would be able to remove the tape? Dont mean to hijack the thread. Think we are looking for the same people.

Paper Conservation Studio
Alan Firkser 1841 Broadway New York, NY 10023 (212) 315-2828 Alan is incredible. I believe Alan is the go to guy for Sothebys and Christies for paper restoration. has not done a photo for me. has done a number of paper items that came out better than I ever could have even dreamed. and he is reasonable regarding price. but not sure whether he does photos, though I would think so. Great financial pickup, and for once I think we can all agree - get the piece restored! Best |

Wow, that is in poor shape but really amazing to see what it should look like. I think a good conservation company will be able to connect the torn pieces and "clean up" the surface to a certain extent to add more clarity to the composition. I have had a few prints restored and they are time consuming and expensive.
Please keep us posted on what you decide to do with the piece. You may be able to frame out the missing pieces so that it looks better by having a custom mat with slanted corners once you've had the piece somewhat restored. |

I would not spend the money to get it restored. I dont even know if a restorer would take on the project. Its not a matter of needing a clean and some fill. A lot would need to be recreated and a lot has faded so much it would have uneven color. Good luck with whatever you decide

from 1 email i have recieved back its going to cost from 1 conservator $500-$1000 and i'm not sure if i would sell it i would get my money back i would have in it. after seeing what it did look like it makes me want to spend the money to have it restored but thats alot of money to spend on photo to bring back some of its former glory.

what i might do is have it stabilized and then frame it with the letter from the hof and i would be happy with that

I don't have any advice on restoration but is that a real photograph? It looks like a xerox. I'm assuming you have it in hand already? Wonder if you can post a few more photos of the front. Perhaps I'm just seeing a very faded image but I can't make out what it is made of. Looks like aged brown paper on the back but the front looks like a faded xerox copy of something.
Maybe my eyes are just bad. At any rate $50 isn't a bad price to take a chance but I can't tell what it is. edited to add: agree with others above and the buyer. Probably doesn't make sense to restore. If the images were there and it was falling apart, it would be one thing but since many of the images aren't visible, hard to imagine it being worthwhile. I wanted to win this item, just to see if I could do a reasonable restoration on it, but I forgot to bid. Glad it went to someone who intends to do something good with it.

Someone else on this thread knows more about this but it does in fact look like a photogravure (I don't know if this is the right term) rather than an actual photograph. If that is the case, they can certainly clean up the image at least a little bit and connect some of the the tears along with filling in some of the holes. Although you are missing entire pieces of the composite that cannot be restored you could always have someone take a very high resolution scan of the composite and do a double sided frame...one side being the original post restoration matted out properly to remove the missing players and the other side being the high resolution copy.
As a side note, I purchased the below Baltimore photograph composite several months ago. The photographs were cut out from N173's and while the entire composite could be cleaned up a bit the actual photographs would be quite a challenge. As a result, I put together my own composite and plan to have a double sided frame made up to showcase both the original and my own interpretation. |

if in fact its anything but a cabinet photo than i would be highly disapointed because the seller says its a original cabinetephoto from 1910. i do believe its a original cabinet photo from the 1910 world champs so anything else i would be not very happy so can anyone tell me how to tell if its a real photo?

Received it today and i believe it has the pieces but needs to be put back together and stabilized. It is a real cabinet photo from what i can tell and believe that was in a dry hot place where the paper dried out and crumbled. So as soon as im able to i will take pics of of one my new favorite pieces of baseball history.
